King Ranch Casserole (Dec 31 2003 20:05 GMT) - One good recipe deserves another. My mom brought over King Ranch Casserole for lunch on Christmas Day. It was awesome, and adding to it's greatness, it held up real well as a refrigerated leftover. She provided the recipe below, under the MORE button. So I made some last night. |

What is the proper way to make a toast? (Dec 31 2003 20:04 GMT) - A Yahoo! Search on "toast making" resulted in an excellent guide to gracious toast giving from Into Wine. This handy guide urges you to be "eloquent, whimsical, and witty," which admittedly isn't much help. But it also offers a few concrete tips:... |

farewell, old un! (Dec 31 2003 20:03 GMT) - gargling the old time, feeling that sliminess as the patchwork clock nears the end of it. all those ticktocks just been adding up, second by second, grain by grain. it's all old and cranky, and maybe there's been some leaks of sand, some cracks and creakers (and don't let's please don't mention those drifty webs draped) and that time stopper's ready to be placed and wheeled out the room. oooh, pretty glint from the dark corners of the doorway shadow. so, maybe the winky eyeballs in my head will latch onto something new or maybe they'll keep veering back in the head, trying to get that old glimpse of those cracked clockers. |

101 Ways to Save the Internet (Dec 31 2003 20:02 GMT) - illustration by Nothing from Outer Space What do do about spammers and Slammers, porn, pirates, con artists and movie execs? Kick back and read our 101 Ways to Save the Internet from the January issue of Wired. None of them involve mandatory digital IDs or UN oversight. Most involved way too much coffee. Jason O'Grady saved me the trouble and scanned in #79-83, the illustrated Apple To-Do List. |

Social Software Ideas: Geo-Info-Reputation Schemes (Dec 31 2003 20:01 GMT) - Matt Haughey, the founder of Metafilter, floats a few ideas for future social software development, including a couple that include smartmobby subjects such as geoinfo and reputation systems (and geoinfo reputation systems). (Via Many 2 Many)Even with a small network of friends, it's tough to find answers for all the questions you might have when you move to a new city. Worse yet is traveling to a new place and having to send off emails to friends that live there, asking them for all their favorite places to eat and have fun. The crux of this idea is to build something that combines a service like Friendster with a review site like Epinions. Basically the site would serve as a digital representation of the connections and knowledge one builds over time when living in the same place. |

More on RFID tracking of Mad Cow disease (Dec 31 2003 20:01 GMT) - A follow up to our post about RFID as a way to track livestock. Shares of Digital Angel a company which makes tracking devices that are implanted into animals have more than doubled since the the announcement of the first Mad Cow case in the US. The company took advantage of the news by touting its RFID devices in a pair of press releases in response to media inquiries. (Via DailyWireless)"The proprietary technology here is that they have the only [Food & Drug Administration] and USDA-approved implantable microchip in livestock, which is the size of a grain of rice and injected under the skin with a syringe," said David Talbot, managing director of Melhado, Flynn & Associates, a brokerage firm, and an investor in the company. "This enables you to track the animal and take their body temperature remotely, from a distance of 20 feet away. |

jellyfish stinging (Dec 31 2003 20:00 GMT) - This is from yesterday's surfing session at Puamana. Jovi, Pono and I had gone upcountry around mid-morning, only to find that neither Chuck nor Aunty Mattie were there. We had mis-heard: Chuck was going to work on the site on Wednesday, not Tuesday. So, we drove back down and all the way westside, in search of some surf. |
