Time to drop the ball (Dec 31 2003 20:12 GMT) - Happy New Year's Eve! I hope someone is doing something exciting this evening -- I need to live vicariously through someone with big plans. Mr. Fish and I are going to be hanging fireside this evening with a couple bottles of wine and a couple pounds of shellfish. Luckily, Mr. |

Patriot Act 2 Is becoming Law -- On the day of Saddams Capture (Dec 31 2003 20:10 GMT) - Clicky Well at least parts of it. In the "Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004" There were clauses taken from the Patriot act 2, and put in HR 2417. The bill was approved on November (HR 2417, not the patriot act) And whats interesting is this bill was signed by Bush on A saturday. The same time that the Media was concentrating on Saddams Capture. |

Iraq or bust! (Dec 31 2003 20:09 GMT) - Iraq or bust! Usama Alshaibi, an Iraqi-American filmmaker whose flight from Saddam's Iraq and experiences in the U.S. were recently featured in Studs Terkel's latest book, is returning to Iraq after over 20 years to film a documentary, and is using his weblog and website to raise funds for the trip. Voynich Might Be an "Elegant Hoax" (Dec 31 2003 20:09 GMT) - The Voynich Manuscript is one of my guilty geeky interests - one that I've mentioned here before on the Blob. In short, the Voynich Manuscript is a 500 year old book hand-written in an unknown alphabet, with illustrations of faeries and apparent cross-references. The mystery of the book has... |

honours (Dec 31 2003 20:09 GMT) - The biannual folly of honours (Arise, Sir Tim!) is upon us. One of the elements of seasonal cheer this year has been the exposure of the triviality that reigns in the award of honours, as well as the publication of a true list of honour: those that have over the years refused honours for whatever reason. |

Presidential Medal of Freedom (Dec 31 2003 20:09 GMT) - One of the arguments that is frequently aired in support of the honours system is that every country has something of the sort. Wrong. Ireland apparently has no honours of any kind. The US is often cited for the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal (as happened on Radio 5 Live this morning). But these strike me as something totally different, not least in that I think any American would be hard pressed to name any recipient of either of these medals. |

Tracking the flicker back to its source (Dec 31 2003 20:08 GMT) - It seems that amidst the glee and anticipation of next week’s Macworld Conference will be a horde of angry Mac users, hell-bent on exposing the display problems and logic board failures that have plagued the final revision of Apple’s G3 iBook line. While Apple has stuck to its no-harm, no-foul mentality, hundreds of iBook owners have been voicing their concerns for months, some even resorting to class-action lawsuits. Several of Apple’s recent released have been hit with production... |

Slow and steady… (Dec 31 2003 20:08 GMT) - Another key aspect is site compatibility, a department that still presents some serious issues for Safari still has some serious issues, especially when it comes to bill paying and bank management. Camino has nailed this, and after a few more months, Safari should see smoother sailing, as the last few straggling Web designers forcefully accept it as a valid avenue for browsing. |

No visible means of support (Dec 31 2003 20:08 GMT) - “I just got carried away and stared making stuff,” said Byrne. “It communicates within certain limited parameters really well and very easily. The genius of it is that it was designed for any idiot to use. I learned it in a few hours, and that’s the idea. It’s not a serious statement about anything. |
