In-depth look back on Apple Computer's 2003 from Mac.Ars (Dec 31 2003 22:13 GMT) - "2003 was a big year for Apple, and arguably its most successful in over a decade on a number of metrics. Apple's stock hit its highest point since May 2002, and after spending most of the rest of that year and first part of 2003 in the US$13-17 range, is now comfortably above US$20. Apple also said goodbye to one of its CPU stalwarts which had been in its lineup since 1997 — the G3. 2003 also looked like the beginning of the end for the oft-maligned G4 processor family for Apple with... |

The Globe and Mail: Just got a Windows PC? 'Take it back and get a Mac' (Dec 31 2003 22:13 GMT) - "Did you find a new computer under the tree this year? Is it driving you crazy yet? Microsoft is warning customers to make sure they enable the built-in software firewall before connecting PCs to the Internet for the first time. If you don't take this simple step, your first connection to the Web may infect your shiny new computer with the Blaster worm, or another annoying Windows virus," Sandy McMurray writes for The Globe and Mail. "Many new PCs come with a... |

RUMOR: Apple planning a low-cost Firewire 800 TV-input device (Dec 31 2003 22:13 GMT) - "Sources from multiple manufacturers of controller chips and DSPs used in HDTV/TV/Analog Video-to-Firewire conversion devices have reported negotiations with Apple to handle production of the 'guts' of such a device, while Apple would supply the enclosure. It would sell for less than $200 initially and gradually be ratcheted down in price over the course of two years -- eventually dropping under $100. The host computer would do as much of the "processing" work as possible... |

And so to dark (Dec 31 2003 22:10 GMT) - I was going to spitefully say how I'm going to avoid an end-of-the-year re-cap, because none of you care, unlike some other people whose blogs I read regularly, but then I got a little sentimental thinking that the year started... |

Counter-Strike Xbox Review (Dec 31 2003 22:10 GMT) - If you make those noises to any gamer, they'll know what you're talking about. This isn't a game I have to explain in detail, because if you've touched PC gaming within the last decade, you've touched "Counter-Strike." This game was so popular that I know multiple chicks that used to play it. I used to wake up in college to the sounds of terrorist warfare--and it was coming from other dorms through our window, all day long. Petty disputes in our dorm were settled over "Counter-Strike," as were relationship troubles and popularity contests. |

NBA Inside Drive 2004 Xbox Review (Dec 31 2003 22:10 GMT) - The Xbox took a big hit this year not being included in EA's online experience; because of the EA titles' lack of online play, the PS2 games generally scored better than the Xbox titles. Thus, Xbox developers had to hustle themselves into the narrow market, providing competitive sports titles that would appear on XSN Sports, and not only provide the online experience but also a single-player game that would keep up with the likes of EA and Sega's market domination. Does "NBA Inside Drive 2004" keep up? Will basketball fans turn their back on EA and Sega for the High Voltage Software-developed, Microsoft-published title? |

Booze (Dec 31 2003 22:09 GMT) - For someone who thinks she drinks as much as I think I drink, I'm really not drinking that much at all, booze-wise. Sometime between now and the end of October, I drank about 2/3 of a bottle of caramel cream liqueur, 34 proof, and I put the rest in the refrigerator to save for later. Said bottle is one of those little 50 ml bottles, the single servings. Half a teaspoon is enough to get me buzzed... |
