New Year's Eve (Dec 31 2003 23:59 GMT)

- As in any household, ours was filled with both happiness and sorrow this past year. No matter how the year past unfolded, we very much enjoy closing it out with any family that we can. Eating good food, drinking fine drink and playing Simpsons Clue.

2003 Highs & Lows (Dec 31 2003 23:56 GMT)

- This year saw a series of highs and lows just like everyone else. Some of the lows were real downers, and some of the highs were joyous occasions. A major low: The first four months meant recovering from glaucoma and cataract surgery. I walked around the house for three months bumping into corners, doors and anything that got in my way.

New Year's Resolutions (Dec 31 2003 23:56 GMT)

- The ball will start to fall in Times Square two nights from now, and as has been true for countless years, people are making New Year's resolutions they may never keep. Such resolutions often are made under the fuzzy cloud influence of two or three alcoholic drinks, and many are never remembered by dawn's early light on New Year's Day. I'm taking a different approach. I'm making my resolutions two days ahead of time with a clear mind. I haven't touched alcohol in 21 years, and so I...

Damn The Dams (Dec 31 2003 23:56 GMT)

- A slow but steady outcry against dams, those monstrous concrete and steel obstructions that block rivers, has been heard for many years. Many sportsmen are condemning and damning those dams. And probably for very good reasons. Few hydroelectric dams generate enough electricity now to do much good. Some dams are unstable, and others are downright dangerous.

Ice Fishing? Where? (Dec 31 2003 23:56 GMT)

- Anglers are chomping at the bit to go ice fishing. The big question is where? There are only a handful of lakes in the northern Lower Peninsula that offer safe ice after Saturday and today's rain and warm temperatures. Many lakes are unsafe, and anglers are strongly advised to practice ice safety regardless of how many people may be fishing. Lakes Cadillac and Mitchell at Cadillac have safe ice although both could get dicey if the weather stays warm for another day or two.

Snowmobile Safety (Dec 31 2003 23:56 GMT)

- It's official. Two snowmobilers have lost their lives so far this winter. Discussions of safety while riding on or driving a snowmobile have been discussed many times, and only repeated reminders have any chance of sinking in the skulls of some hard-headed snowmobilers. Those who pay attention may live to see the spring; those who do not may not make it through February.

Merry Christmas (Dec 31 2003 23:56 GMT)

- A decent amount of snow fell during the night in northern Michigan, and shortly after daybreak I was shoveling around the garage and near the newspaper tube. It was Christmas morning, and all was well in my world. I chatted briefly with a neighbor out for an early morning walk in the snow with his two dogs, and we discussed the deer situation. He feels me and my neighbor have all the bucks and he only has does. I remind him that during the rut a good place to find bucks is where all the...

A Christmas Wish (Dec 31 2003 23:56 GMT)

- Christmas wish lists change once we progress from childhood to the adult stage of our lives. The old saying that the difference between a man and a boy is the price of his toy is very true. However, my wishes are priceless and have nothing to do with fishing or hunting toys. They have everything to do with our personal ethics, stewardship of our natural resources, and how we treat each other. Far too many people are takers and too few are givers.

Run a Mailing List? Better Check the CAN-SPAM Law Tonight (Dec 31 2003 23:55 GMT)

- I was just reading through some aspects of the CAN-SPAM law which goes into effect January 1, 2004, and realized that it is broadly applicable to normal email lists that have no ostensible commercial purpose. (Oddly, the bill was indexed incorrectly, so the key section -- number five -- is available only by scrolling down in Section 3.) That is, if you're running a regular email list that has links to a Web site that is commercial in nature (shows ads, sells a product, you make money in some fashion from it), you might need to comply with the requirements of the law. Note that I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice.

Top Spam For The Year: Viagra, Mortgages And Porn (Dec 31 2003 23:51 GMT)

- Well, what better way to close out the year than a post about spam? AOL has released their list of "top" spam messages from 2003 which represent the subject lines of the spam they found most often in 2003. At the top of the list, of course, is any subject pitching Viagra. Next up are spam for low mortgage rates, and coming in third is the ever popular porn spam. AOL claims they blocked 500 billion spam messages - an average of about 40 per day per user.

Happy New Year! (Dec 31 2003 23:51 GMT)

- A very Happy New Year to all of my readers (both of you)! Looking forward to a lot of new things, both at home at work. I'm looking to ramp up my contracting (let me know if you know of anyone looking for a solid, experienced ASP.NET developer/architect), while keeping my hand in writing and conferences. I should have more articles coming out on the MSDN ASP.
