Outsource this! (Jan 01 2004 09:56 GMT) - A critique of Bush's economic advisors leads to the suggestion: how about outsourcing the job to competent third world economists who can take advantage of modern communications, do the job from Beijing or Bangalore, and make 1-10th as much! |

Web filtering software (Jan 01 2004 09:55 GMT) - After a recent incident of a too-curious child surfing somewhere they shouldn't have, I'm looking for web filtering software for my home machine. Anyone have any recommendations? I'm not sure I want to prevent viewing so much as ensure that we know what has been viewed, but I'm considering all possibilities. |

New romantics and barely there Bikinis (Jan 01 2004 09:51 GMT) - Nobody wants to read my political (or not) rantings about userlinux, so here's something more entertaining. Matt, as you may know, is the most unromantic guy on the planet. He bought me flowers once, and last Valentines day, took a... |

Polyglot: extensible compiler framework (Jan 01 2004 09:51 GMT) - Polyglot is a Java class library that is easily extended through inheritance to create a compiler for a language that is a modification to Java. Language extensions can be implemented without duplicating code from the framework itself. Polyglot is useful for implementing domain-specific languages, for exploring language design ideas, and for simplifying Java for pedagogical purposes. The framework has been used to implement both major and minor modifications to Java. Experience implementing several languages in this framework suggests that the cost of implementing language extensions scales well with the degree to which the language extends Java. |

First real test of the Bahraini Parliament on Jan 10th (Jan 01 2004 09:51 GMT) - At last they're doing something good. They're doing what we're paying them to do, rather than waste our time with issues like allowing a singer to perform, veiled women to drive and security personnel to grow their beards. They've now got their teeth into something that could change the course of history in this fine country of ours. MPs charged with the investigation of the bankruptcy of the Pension Fund and General Organisation of Social Insurance have submitted a 1,200 page report to the chairman of the House of Representatives which implicates 3 ministers for mismanaging the two organisations. It is not too far fetched that at least one minister will be indicted and removed from the cabinet. |

DICK CHENEY, HALLIBURTON AND OIL (Jan 01 2004 09:50 GMT) - I wanted to start this year with a positive sign, it's meagre, but here it is: Financial Times: "The U.S. military says it will soon take over Halliburton's role of getting fuel into Iraq, a decision that follows a draft Pentagon audit that found Vice President Dick Cheney's old firm may have overcharged for the job. |

Psychicpants (Jan 01 2004 09:47 GMT) - The name of the blog is Pyschicpants. The bloggers--there are two of them, it seems--who deny that the site is a blog are both in Quezon City. Happy New Year! (Jan 01 2004 09:46 GMT) - The big story of this year's New Year's Eve celebrations, is one you won't see in the headlines. No attacks were launched at any Western country by Al-Qaeda or any other Islamonazi group. You'll see stories about the tight security at major celebrations, but none about car bombs and body counts. The only New Year's Eve terror attacks were carried out in Middle Eastern countries, such as Iraq. It reminds me of Frank Zappa's line, that "Jazz isn't dead. |
