Watch out (Jan 02 2004 15:59 GMT) - I've been on the lookout for The Perfect Watch for a long time. What I want are:A readable face, preferably black on whiteA second handMarkings for minutes/seconds as well as hoursLight weightA comfortable wristbandReasonably low cost, since I'll probably lose itWhat I don't want are:A little window for the day, or anything else that's hard to set and wrong most of the time anywayAny stylistic or functional flourish that defeats the simple purpose of telling time to the secondA five-pound wristbandUglinessNow comes a watch for which I might make an exception: The Amazing Catapult Watch: |

Uh oh, they're starting to get it (Jan 02 2004 15:58 GMT) - Freewheeling 'bloggers' are rewriting the rules of journalism, in USA Today. It's still framed in terms of competition between bigfeet and littlefeet, even though the market logic is AND, not OR. It's also focused mostly on politics, which is fine.As usual, Jay Rosen gets the best pull quote: readers are becoming writers. |

Regarding BBC radio presenters (Jan 02 2004 15:58 GMT) - Last post by Dan on 14:53 02/Jan/04 - Since I live in Ireland, I can't get a great reception for BBC radio other than on the internet. I've heard various opinions on people such as Mark and Lard and especially Chris Moyles, but I haven't really heard them for myself and can't be arsed in any case. |

Some School Districts Challenge Bush's Signature Education Law (Jan 02 2004 15:57 GMT) - A growing number of school systems are beginning to resist the No Child Left Behind law, saying it is too costly and cumbersome. [New York Times: NYT HomePage]I think that the thought that this program could help all schools had some fatal flaws (being modeled after programs in Texas being one, their schools are no more successful then AZ which is also not at the top of the heap.) without incentives for better teachers to join and STAY in teaching there is little hope that just raising standards will have any long term effect... time will tell, but then again it probably will not, since no is ever willing to stick with something long enough to get through the first two parts of educational change, the bubble and the pop. |

Accounting Rules Let Companies Take More Risk with Pensions (Jan 02 2004 15:55 GMT) - Excerpt: "In the past decade, many employers have quietly taken on more risk in pension plans - loading up on stocks, their own securities and nontraditional and illiquid investments - thanks to accounting rules for pensions that enable employers to capture all of the investment upside, while postponing losses and shifting the consequences of poor investment results to their workers and retirees."
