Theories of Socio-Technologies (Jan 02 2004 23:04 GMT) - From pwylla comes this link to a number of links to Felix Stalder's writings on theories of socio-technologies. Stalder's review of "The Religion of Technology: The Divinity of Man and the Spirit of Invention" makes for an especially good read. This is not to say, that I agree with Stalder on everything he says, but he incites thinking - hooray for thinking. |

Linux Annoyances: fonts (Jan 02 2004 23:04 GMT) - I spend a lot of time in emacs-land looking at source code. I like to be able to view as many lines of code as possible in a single screen but I'm getting old so I have to take care of my eyes. Even on a 19" monitor, the 1600x1200 resolution is starting to be a strain. Anything that makes life easier on the eyes is welcome which is why I recently switched to using Bitstream Vera fonts in Emacs. These fonts are monospaced (ala 'Monaco' on the Macintosh) so are excellent for programming. |

when good men love bad tivos (Jan 02 2004 23:03 GMT) - It's just as I feared would happen. While my TiVo wasn't wearing a housecoat when I got home this evening, and had not in fact recorded Jerry Springer, it had done something just as bad: it had recorded two episodes of Maury and one of The View. While I apparently have their TiVo, somewhere in middle America a frumpy housewife in curlers and her disheveled, stained t-shirt wearing, unemployed husband (I keep picturing Onslow from Keeping Up Appearances) are sitting in front of the TiVo in their trailer, while enjoying a couple of Budweisers, and wondering why it keeps recording Sex in the City, Will and Grace and the Biography channel special on Judy Garland. |

Sterling opinions (Jan 02 2004 23:02 GMT) - John Lebkowski elicits a State of the World address, point by point, from Bruce Sterling. Very provocative. My fave point(s):I don't believe in "War on Terror," |

Browser Spoofing FIX (bookmarklet) (Jan 02 2004 23:01 GMT) - Kevin Donahue has written a bookmarklet that will tell if an URL is spoofed or not. I tested it in both IE6, and Firebird 0.7; it worked great in both, telling me the site was spoofed. By right-clicking Kevin's bookmarklet, and saving it to your favorites/bookmarks, you'll be able to load a page, then check to see if it's spoofed (IE will popup a warning; |

Yet another blogging award type thang (Jan 02 2004 23:01 GMT) - And speaking of contests, there is also BlogMadness 2003, where participants enter what they consider to be their best entry of 2003. Sounds interesting, so I combed through the entries for 2003. It's sobering that I didn't really find that many entries I liked. It was quickly narrowed down to two entries, a three line entry (six lines if you include the title) and the Fourth of July entry, with pictures. As much as I liked the three line entry, it was this picture that won out, so that was the entry I entered. |

It was a dark and stormy night ? (Jan 02 2004 23:01 GMT) - I say, bleah. Brevity is the soul of wit, and this goes on and on and on and then it goes on and on and on some more and then it goes on for a bit after that. Long, long, long. Much funnier, sez I, is the likes of this: Jennifer stood there, quietly ovulating. |

The Bush Tax (Jan 02 2004 23:00 GMT) - I don't normally discuss politics, but I'm currently reading Hillary Clinton's Living History. Thus, politics have been on more mind more often than usual. As I was catching up on this Harvard 1L's Journal, I noticed that this entry discussed how Howard Dean intends to deal with the tax issue in the upcoming election. Although the referenced website doesn't exactly state an affirmative democratic plan, it does look like a good start:Rather than take responsibility for our common future, Bush has shifted costs to states and communities, who then pass then on to you. |

Modeling and the Future (Jan 02 2004 23:00 GMT) - Mark Kleiman runs a political blog I subscribe to with my RSS reader. In response to novelist Michael Crichton's rant that global warming is just bad science, he recently posted a brief but insightful exploration of... [Another World Is Here] Right, then. We can't know what the world will look like in 2100. But unless we also don't care what the world looks like in 2100, or unless we think our current actions have zero predictable impact on what he world will look like in 2100, we need to make decisions now -- we are, in fact, making decisions now -- in which results a century hence are part of the objective function. |
