Down and Dirty Pictures (Jan 06 2004 04:59 GMT) - Book Reviews: Peter Biskind has turned his sights on the 1990s and the independent-film movement, and the result, "Down and Dirty Pictures," is like VH1's "Behind the Music": It's a titillating look at showbiz money, infighting and egos, but there's never any sense of artistic achievement, exhilaration or creativity in the biz. |

Win a Date With Tad Hamilton! (Jan 06 2004 04:59 GMT) - Film Reviews: As sweet-natured and unsure as its heroine, "Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!" is a movie made by several clearly smart people slumming their way through a nice but inconsequential romancer. This reverse fairy tale directly but superficially addresses celebrity worship as a young West Virginia gal snags an evening with her favorite movie star, only to find herself disillusioned yet able to finally perceive her true love. |

Five Gold Rings (Jan 06 2004 04:59 GMT) - Legit Reviews: Not every dysfunctional family drama contains lines like, "It is art to fly speech in the air," but Joanna Laurens' Almeida Theater entry "Five Gold Rings" has loftier things in mind than the mere settling of domestic scores. In her sophomore play following her much-praised debut effort "The Three Birds" (which I missed), Laurens wants to reinvent the discourse in such plays, trading in a time-worn naturalism for a heightened language that less charitably inclined playgoers likely will find wearing. |

(Jan 06 2004 04:58 GMT) - South Africas the Independent Online (via Google News) reports that there are complications over the film rights to The Hobbit which Peter Jackson was expressed interest in making following he completion of the upcoming King Kong remake. The report states that while New Line Cinema which made the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy owns the movie rights to The Hobbit, its American distribution rights are owned by United Artists. My feeling is that the pile of money from The Hobbit would be certainly be big enough to split and an agreement will be reached. The next question to ask: |

Presidential Candidate Stem Cell Positions (Jan 06 2004 04:57 GMT) - Since we're on the topic of presidential candidates, we should point out that the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research is asking candidates for their positions on stem cell research. You can also use the CAMR website to write to local media and help make stem cell research an issue in the 2004 presidential election. Go ahead and take a few minutes to do this: |
