Sense memory (Jan 09 2004 00:55 GMT) - Winter has returned to Vancouver. Winter that is normal for Vancouver, that is. That hiccough of cold and snow and ice has lifted, leaving only a few crystalized white reminders about the neighbourhood. When I stepped out to make the daily pilgrimage eastward across the street to the coffeeshop, I had to stop and take in the smells of wet ground and various flora in thaw. Those scents had been missing during the cold snap, held down under snow and lacking the medium of airborne moisture needed to create the luscious, almost drinkable air of the rainforest after a good soaking. |
