Mega Clusters and Super Computers (Jan 09 2004 00:06 GMT) - Nope. Coherence isn't running on the NEC earth simulator with 36 TFlOpS yet. However, Jon sent me a link to this image today which I found to be VERY interesting. It's a log10-scaled view of the increase in computing power (measured in TFlOpS, which are Trillions of Floating-point Operations per Second) as represented by the slowest and fastest of the world's fastest 500 super-computers, as well as the sum of all 500. Obviously, the fastest is going to be a step function, as a new big bertha comes on line every few years, jumping ahead and then retaining its top spot maybe for a year or two. |

TECH TALK: Good Books: The Scientists (Jan 09 2004 00:05 GMT) - Tracy Kidder’s “Mountains Beyond Mountains” traces the story of one person’s quest to cure the world. John Gribbin’s “The Scientists” sheds light on the lives of the greatest inventors over the past 500 years. From the book’s description: “John Gribbin tells the stories of the people who have made science, and of the times in which they lived and worked. He begins with Copernicus, during the Renaissance, when science replaced mysticism as a means of explaining the workings of the world, and he continues through the centuries, creating an unbroken genealogy of not only the greatest but also the more obscure names of Western science, a dot-to-dot line linking amateur to genius, and accidental discovery to brilliant deduction. |
