Hybird Car Review (Jan 09 2004 02:59 GMT) - Hybird Car Review My buddy and ex-roomie reviews his new Civic Hybrid. I was (a little) surprised when he sold his SUV to buy it. I'm still waiting for hybrid SUVs for now, and full-on hydrogen-power (and the cheap organic solar cells to make my own hydrogen) in the near future. |

Red sky at morning... (Jan 09 2004 02:59 GMT) - Gretchen spotted this while making breakfast and we both took pictures while the light lasted. This wonderful light show occurred around 7:00am, but the sky grew overcast soon after that and the temperature stayed in the twenties all day.... |

More joy (Jan 09 2004 02:58 GMT) - I woke up this morning around 6am and went downstairs to get my normal bowl of cereal (Grape Nuts, if you must know) ... and heard a hissing noise. A little investigation revealed that it was coming from the pipe... |

Dolphin Mystery: What's Killing Firstborn Calves? (Jan 09 2004 02:58 GMT) - Although dolphin numbers in these waters have risen slightly over the last few decades, the scientists are trying to understand why so many firstborn calves die: Less than a quarter live out their first year, compared with 70 to 80 percent of subsequent births. One reason may be man-made pollutants—and the transfer of chemical contaminants to calves through milk, according to Randy Wells, a conservation biologist with the Chicago Zoological Society and director of the Mote Marine Laboratory for Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Research in Sarasota. |

US Treasury: Anonymity? Er ... No. (Jan 09 2004 02:58 GMT) - "The unusually large number of comments received...has made it difficult to remove all street addresses, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses from the comments for posting on our Internet Web site in a timely manner" So they're posting comments all raw on their website. Damn government. |

'Aggressive' e-mail health threat (Jan 09 2004 02:58 GMT) - Probably not all that surprising, but a study has shown that aggressive work emails or emails from superiors are likely to increase blood pressure. The worst offenders, of course, are those that combine both conditions: the dreaded angry email from the boss. The study suggests, then, that's counter-productive for bosses to vent their anger in email to staff. The folks who performed the study suggest that part of the problem is that the impersonal nature of email makes people more willing to be particularly nasty in writing the emails. |

HP branded iPods on their way (Jan 09 2004 02:58 GMT) - As part of the agreement, the terms of which were finished only after a late-night bargaining session on Wednesday, Apple will manufacture its popular iPod player in a HP corporate blue hue, and Hewlett, the world's second-largest computer maker, will place an icon on the desktop of its consumer PC's, directing its customers to Apple's software and music store. Forget File Sharing - It's The DVD That's Killing Other Ente (Jan 09 2004 02:58 GMT) - While most forms of entertainment are struggling for a variety of reasons, the DVD has continued to be an astounding success that many people just can't explain. However, plenty of other entertainment mediums are trying to piggyback on the DVD's success - as they realize that DVD buying and watching is clearly eating into their own business. Old TV shows are being pulled out of the vault as quickly as possible and put on DVD. Record labels are adding DVDs to albums they release. Movie theaters are even thinking of giving "bonus points" towards free DVDs based on how many theater tickets (or how much popcorn) you buy. |

Woz And Motorola To Make Spying On Kids Easier Than Ever (Jan 09 2004 02:58 GMT) - Motorola is set to announce that they're licensing technology from Steve Wozniak's Wheels of Zeus - though, they don't say what they're going to use it for. The idea behind WoZ is that they've built some sort of cheap GPS device that can broadcast location over the 900 MHz spectrum (yeah, the cordless phone technology). The plan is that everyone who buys a system from them will contribute their base station to create a greater mesh network to cover the world with base stations that can communicate the location of anyone (or thing) who is tagged with a WoZ location device. It sounds particularly underwhelming. It's not all that different than other offerings, and requires quite a bit of critical mass before it becomes all that useful. |

Roundup: Universal Remote Controls (Jan 09 2004 02:58 GMT) - A universal remote control tries to simplify a home theater setup by combining several remotes into a single device. Most universal remotes made today require you to enter a code for each device you want the remote to control. Or, as a last resort, you can manually "teach" some universal remotes the commands of the remote it will replace. |

If the iPod mini Were a Car, What Kind of Car Would it Be? (Jan 09 2004 02:58 GMT) - I've been thinking about the announcement of the iPod mini for about 24 hours now, and I think I've finally come up with a good perspective from which to view it. Prior to the announcement, a lot of people expected Apple Computer to announce a new iPod based on a small, cheap hard drive like the one recently announced by Cornice. The thinking was that this would allow them to price the new iPod below $200. |
