Complaint of the Day (Jan 09 2004 06:59 GMT) - My nice new Palm Tungsten T3 has (at least) three modes of text input. You can set up the Graffiti writing area in too different modes for Graffiti, and one where it turns into an on-screen keyboard, and then you can enable Graffiti on the main part of the screen (which works great in some applications and not at all in others). My complaint of the day is two-fold. First of all, I'd like to have the option of writing in the old form of Graffiti. Sure, Graffiti 2 seems so much simpler and close to how people write on paper, but it's much more error-prone and I've still got all the old strokes ready for use even though it's been 4 months since I last used my old Palm (the scraped model |

JINI resilience (Jan 09 2004 06:59 GMT) - Has anyone used JINI to provide copies of the same application running on different machines to provide higher fault tolerance? If so, how do you manage centralised tracking of status of each of these "node" applications i.e. how do you make sure that if an application goes down then another can step in with the processing?I am currently in the process of designing an application that will has to be up and running 24 x 7 and am wondering whether JINI would be the answer. |

Astronomical Surface Decorations on Ceramics, ... (Jan 09 2004 06:59 GMT) - Astronomical Surface Decorations on Ceramics, Mesoamerica part XI Continuing from yesterday, with an event such as an eclipse, one would think would have been important to note. Vase number 2026 may describe just this sort of phenomenon: Dave Kelly suggests the rabbits are phases of the moon leading to an eclipse. D. Stuart reads the text as 'There are rabbits, there are no rabbits. |

Advice on troubleshooting and buying printers (Jan 09 2004 06:59 GMT) - I gave some out-of-character advice this week when someone came calling looking for help troubleshooting an inkjet printer. Essentially, I told him that unless the problem turned out to be a problem with his cabling (it was--his USB hub had gone bad), he'd be best off just buying a new printer. In my experience doing desktop support (mostly HP and Canon inkjets), a very limited number of things can go wrong with inkjet printers. 1. Cabling. |

Who will speak up? (Jan 09 2004 06:59 GMT) - In Germany they first came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me - and by that time no one was left to speak up. |

Pakistan's debt to Indian Muslims - Asia Times (Jan 09 2004 06:57 GMT) - "The Muslim situation in India has always been affected by the level of the long running hostility between India and Pakistan ...

Suddenly it all makes sense (Jan 09 2004 06:55 GMT) - In November, I recieved a peculiar postcard, which I noted and shared here, thinking it somehow foreshadowed an event involving Ken, an ex-coworker of both of ours, and a story involving fecal matter. At that time I did not share the message on the back of the card, as I found it obtuse, possibly a feeble 'jest.' Now it's all... |
