Project Gutenberg 's Anabasis (Jan 09 2004 11:58 GMT) - Via Open Access News: Why have ebooks failed thus far? We can get at this by looking at why Project Gutenberg does not use image scans of printed texts: "eople are not interested in scans. Some Project Gutenberg sites each hand out 10 million eBooks per year -- impossible with scanned images or full text eBooks due to their bandwidth-consuming oversize. |

Do Web Search Engines Suppress Controversy? (Jan 09 2004 11:58 GMT) - Interesting article that touches on distance learning by using the David Noble 'digital diploma mill' controversy as one of five examples. The author asks, do we search engines stifle controversial subjects? There is some evidence that some such issues do not show up in simple searches, but this is more a result of social factors, not technological. In the discussion there is an interesting distinction drawn between the 'organizational' web of "companies, universities, trade associations, consortia, alliances, and government agencies", and the 'analytic web', consisting of "full–text (or tables of contents) journals, technical reports and preprints, opinion pages, bibliographies, and pages of links to these." While the former is well interlinked, the latter is not. |

Linux & broadband [Simon Raybould] (Jan 09 2004 11:58 GMT) - Hi - looking for some re-assurance here from people who are more technically minded. My work PC is dual boot to Windows (for games) and (Mandrake) Linux (for important stuff like work!); my daughters both use Windows XP on their machines ('cos I wanted them have the same stuff as they're stuck with at school). At the moment we fight over a dial-up to our ISP..... |

Well, That's A Great Way To Start The Day (Jan 09 2004 11:58 GMT) - Woke up to discover that my little writing project had been added to MovableType's Spotlight Sites last night.Leukemia Survivor is a gripping first-person memoir of one man's experiences fighting, and triumphing over, his disease. Though it's been a decade since the struggle, the creative use of Movable Type's categories and templates makes the presentation and impact of this diary as immediate as if the events happened yesterday.I expect traffic levels to increase dramatically over there, since the list of Spotlight Sites doesn't ever go away. Thanks, Anil. |

PowerPoint column still generating comments (Jan 09 2004 11:55 GMT) - Last Monday appeared my net column on PowerPoint (written in Finnish, Kuinka PowerPoint tuhosi avaruussukkulan). This column is still generating feedback, more than any writing I have written before. (Well, perhaps a printed column on LaTeX vs. Microsoft Word generated more feedback.) Readers are either defending PowerPoint or telling their favorite story about problems with PowerPoint. |

Sun's Banner Year-2004?
