I don't agree it's a crass political maneuver (Jan 09 2004 16:59 GMT) - But isn't Bush's overall strategy - bringing Hispanics into the folds of the Republican Party - ingenious? He's been doing it forever, and I imagine it has something to do with his home and tenure in Texas, and his personal relationship with Vicente Fox. But as a political maneuver, bringing Hispanics into the Republican Party, like blacks were brought into the Democratic Party, would assure a Republican edge for decades. It's the fastest growing ethnic group, by far. It's also not that far-fetched. |

Lunch (Jan 09 2004 16:58 GMT) - LunchDon't you just love sandwiches and soup some days? It is so cold here. I'm gonna have a tuna melt and some chicken noodle soup I think. I'm so glad I have these helpful friends, who brought me gobs of nice food for my fridge and I did NOT have to go outside! The last thing I want is to risk frostbite to get some groceries. |

Monastery Boathouse in Fall Colors (Jan 09 2004 16:57 GMT) - Here's my best photo so far from last fall. Click the photo for a larger version. Monastery Boathouse in Fall Colors, Hyde Park, October 2003 I took this photo about an hour after the fog had lifted from the valley. It was crisp and cold, probably in the high 20's, and the trees were close to their peak in color. I had envisioned taking a panorama that included the actual Monastery itself, but couldn't come up with a good composition from the limited number of vantage points I was able to reach. |

GNU/Linux, usability, and freedom (Jan 09 2004 16:56 GMT) - There's been talk lately about GNU/Linux usability. Let's not confuse the liberties associated with GNU/Linux with its ease of use. [NewsForge] '-- Intellectual usability allows GNU/Linux users to customize things so that their operating system works the way they want it to -- so that their operating system is usable. It's adaptable. The future of GNU/Linux, we should all agree, is in its adaptability. |

Blogger News Item (Jan 09 2004 16:54 GMT) - Danger for the Democrats From the Progessive Review newsletter Serious danger awaits the Democratic Party if Clark continues to show strength. The media, led by CNN, has been promoting a falsely glamorous picture of the general who is distrusted, disliked, and disrespected by a number of his military and diplomatic colleagues and whose career is marked far more by institutional chutzpah than by military heroics. The media, which often has childlike fantasies concerning military officials, has not bothered to look closely into Clark's background. Among the things it might find if it did: how Richard Holbrooke insisted on a top aide always being close to Clark in case he said something stupid in public, how Clark endangered peace negotiations, and the lieutenant colonel responsible for keeping Clark's shoes shined. |
