Bangladesh bans Islam sect books - BBC (Jan 10 2004 03:59 GMT) - "Bangladesh has banned publications by the minority Ahmadiyya movement amid demands from Islamic hardliners that it be declared non-Muslim ... The Ahmadiyyas, who number 100,000 in Bangladesh, do not believe Mohammed was necessarily the last prophet. A home ministry statement said the ban 'was imposed in view of objectionable materials in such publications that hurt or might hurt the sentiments of the majority Muslim population of Bangladesh'." |

What Not To Say To A Recruiter (Jan 10 2004 03:58 GMT) - If there's two things you can count on in this world, it's death, taxes and recruiter phone calls. Wait a sec'; that's three things. Ok, well, in the spirit of counting, here's our Top 10 list of things you should not say when a job recruiter calls you. |

OzPolFeeds (cont...) (Jan 10 2004 03:57 GMT) - I identified a few things with the feeds that have now been fixed. Dates are properly added to the Democrats feed, the author is now listed at the top of the ALP feed, the Liberals feed has been renamed to reflect that fact that it is the PM media statements being listed. I have checked the legal note on each site I am scraping from and it all seems ok for the type of purpose I am using it for. The ALP explicitely includes a note allowing this kind of use so no probs there. And now I am starting to be able to see the benefit from this work. |

Beyond Imagination (Jan 10 2004 03:57 GMT) - I suppose that once an educated estimate has been placed on the limits of your personal lifeline, there are bound to be the condescending soul-savers attempting to convert you to born-again status. It makes it even more difficult when the insisting force comes from a family member. You can't comfortably shut the door in their face and discussion is draining simply because it's been beaten repeatedly over the years. It doesn't seem to matter whether you have agreed to disagree in the past. All the proselytizer cares about is salvation, going as far as to intimate that if you were born-again an anti-anxiety medication wouldn't be necessary. |

my name is thom and i'm a biblioholic (Jan 10 2004 03:56 GMT) - Four white Ikea bookcases line the walls of the media room, three more form a white wall facing the bed in the bedroom down the hall, while yet another in the entry greets me at the front door; on their shelves books lie on top of the standing rows. In the gaps between the cases, piles of other books begin to lean like tiny Towers of Pisa, while in the corners of the bedroom and on tables and desks throughout the condo stacked books stand almost like paper furniture. In the kitchen a row of cookbooks two high line the wall atop one cabinet next to the stove, while others hide behind the door of the microwave stand. And, in the hall and bedroom closet, boxes contain dozens and dozens more--including several in Russian that I probably can no longer even read--while only yards away up the hallway outside my entry door is the condo's library, so full of books that a sign went up two days ago asking residents not to donate any more. |

Pakistan fears free trade but senses opportunity - Hindustan Times (Jan 10 2004 03:56 GMT) - "While businessmen in Pakistan are excited by the prospect of increased regional trade after the implementation of the South Asian Free Trade Agreement (SAFTA) in 2006, many fear Pakistan's high-cost economy will be swamped by powerhouse India ... According to captains of trade and industry, Pakistan is likely to benefit only in the long run while in the short term, high power tariffs that affect competitiveness will actually hurt the Pakistani economy." |

SCO approached Google about Linux license (Jan 10 2004 03:56 GMT) - Why not the execs at SCO have to figure that Google has got money too. The execs at Google are probably just pissed off about this as they to have now been entered into the SCO media lawsuit fiasco. SEATTLE (Reuters) - SCO Group Inc., the software company that is suing IBM and extracting royalties from other Linux users, said Friday that it had held "low-level talks" with Internet search engine Google about a license agreement."Certainly if they're using 10,000 Linux servers that include our intellectual property as part of Unix, we would want them to license," said Blake Stowell, a SCO spokesman. |

Life as a Cub (Jan 10 2004 03:55 GMT) - Where have all the cub reporters gone? Fictional enterprises no longer seem to harbor the fantasy of underaged journalists risking life and limb in the pursuit of a hot scoop, something that seemed once to be a fairly commonplace — or at least somewhat plausible — pretext for throwing likable young adult characters into unspeakably dangerous situations. This was the absurd and yet intoxicating premise behind the indefatigable cub reporter Tintin, the Belgian comic strip character who celebrates his 75th anniversary today. |
