Good Parent, Bad Fairy (Jan 11 2004 01:56 GMT) - I got home last night to my son losing is 4th teeth and although I feel I'm a pretty decent parent, I'm a shitty tooth fairy. We put the boys to bed and then came down to watch Bruce Almighty (great movie) and San asked if we should go put the money under the pillow and I said no, he isn't asleep yet, we will do it on our way up to bed. We (I) watched the movie and San fell asleep, it got over and I didn't remember the whole tooth thing so I started watching The Fifth Element and fell asleep before she fell into the car. At some point in the night Nick woke up and San went to take care of him and then she just went to bed. At 6: |

Kids from and Adults eye (Jan 11 2004 01:56 GMT) - Email received from my friend Matt: When I was a kid adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were when they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning uphill both ways through year 'round blizzards carrying their younger siblings on their backs to their one-room schoolhouse where they maintained a straight-A average despite their full-time after-school job at the local textile mill where they worked for 35 cents an hour just to help keep their family from starving to death! And I remember promising myself that when I grew up there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it! |

Its also not been a good week for sleep in our house. Kids are feeling well, so they wake up and cry all night long. San has been a saint and dealt with them most (all) of the time till this morning, Nicholas yelled out and she said can you deal with him please and I said sure, so I yelled back " |

AUS: Britain sours the hopes of wine exporters (Jan 11 2004 01:55 GMT) - The Australian wine export juggernaut is grinding to a halt with sales slowing and the nation's biggest volume market in Britain undergoing a worrying decline. The industry which has been widely lauded for its export success in the past decade, achieved only a modest 6.1 per cent export growth in 2003. |

US: New focus for wine exporters (Jan 11 2004 01:55 GMT) - Wine exports to the U.S. increased by sixty per cent last year, forcing at least one global wine company to change direction. Many consumers are buying wine for the first time, creating stronger demand at the cheaper end of the market. Over the past three months, Beringer Blass has been cancelling contracts in premium wine regions including South Australia's Coonawarra. |

Mind-Reading Computers (Jan 11 2004 01:52 GMT) - The Economist reports that a team of neurologists and computer scientists in Berlin have created a breakthrough in the field of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) -- a system that already allows people to play Pac-Man and other video games by thought alone, using electrodes attached to players' heads as input devices. In the field of brain-computer interfaces (BCI), this is revolutionary, in two respects. First, the volunteers need only a small amount of practice before they can use the system—most brain-computer interfaces require about 200 hours of training. Second, the interface is non-invasive, and merely relies on electrodes stuck on to the skin. read the full article |
