At last, Indians ripped for electoral shenanigans ... (Jan 11 2004 05:57 GMT) - At last, Indians ripped for electoral shenanigans - but does the story stand up?Robert Don't Plame Me Novak has been and gone and done it: according to the Rapid City, SD Journal (January 9), on CNN's Crossfire on Tuesday [1]In 2002, [Republican candidate John] Thune would have been elected to the state's other Senate seat, but the election was stolen by stuffing ballot boxes on Indian reservations. Now, Tom Daschle may have to pay for that theft. Now, there's what might be thought to be a smoke-screen of the expected sort of whining from the Indians and their friends, and a Nothing to do with me, guv from the Thune camp, such as to suggest that Novak might be right on the facts. |

(Jan 11 2004 05:57 GMT) - Emily Roebling and Mary Craig Sinclair - a six degrees of separation thing...On September 14 2003, I mentioned the woman who got the Brooklyn Bridge finished as exactly the sort of heroine to get up the noses of the wimmin - the MLA, Jane Austen wacking off, Judith Butler crowd mentioned in pieces earlier in the week: acting as a helpmeet to her sick husband, studying his business to fill his shoes, etc, etc. And, just now, hailed the wife of Bolshie author Upton Sinclair as equally unlikely to find herself voted into any feminist hall of fame any time soon. There is a connection, I see: |

(Jan 11 2004 05:57 GMT) - Follies over at State still have their momentsI moseyed over to the State site to look for any word of a USG on the issue of Bolivian requests for sovereign sea access (there needs to be a snappy acronym in the (thoroughly implausible) event that this thing ever really gets going).(There is wishful thinking in the Bolivian press [1] that, when Bush meets Carlos Mesa after the Cumbre Extraordinaria de las Amricas in Monterrey next week, Bush will in some way come to the aid of the party.)Nothing in the briefings so far this year. But worthy of note from the January 5 session is this interchange with Richard Boucher's alternate, Adam Ereli:QUESTION: |

I tried it out, but wasn't impressed--the sound quality was significantly worse than the same MP3s played on my Pismo. After that I forgot about the iPod, and didn't pay any attention when iPods and iTunes became compatible with Windows (I have a Windows system at home, but I don' |

TiVo for the... Being compared ... (Jan 11 2004 05:55 GMT) - TiVo for the... Being compared to TiVo is just about the best praise you can ask for in the technology space right now. While I don't think TiVo the company will thrive in the long-term, they've elevated the expectations of consumers everywhere, and not just within TV. Whether they succeed commercially or not, they've changed the world. That's not too shabby. |

I actually get productive in afternoons. (Jan 11 2004 05:55 GMT) - I put away some laundry. Shocking. That, of course, was so I could find things to wear to get dressed with. Perhaps my new "Thou shalt put away laundry" resolution should be to pick the clothing you need to wear from the pile of clean laundry, and to put away all the things you find in your quest for a complete outfit that aren't the bits you were looking for. I had to hang up about six shirts before I could find underpants, and then I put assloads of underpants away before locating a bra and pants. |
