Aaron's Wrong (Jan 11 2004 22:59 GMT) - Aaron Swartz: The New York Times Upfront asked me to contribute a short piece to a point/counterpoint they were having on download. (I would defend downloading, of course.) I thought I managed to write a pretty good piece, especially for its size and audience, in a couple days. But then I found out my piece was cut because the Times had decided not to tell kids to break the law. |

The earliest Iron Age chariot burial in Britain (Jan 11 2004 22:59 GMT) - An Iron Age chariot unearthed at an Edinburgh building site has been proved the oldest in Britain. Radiocarbon tests on the wheels of the chariot, which has been described as a "Ferrari of the Iron Age", have proved it dates back to 400BC - 200 years earlier than the previous oldest British find. Scientists have just finished studying the remains and it is now being prepared to go on public display, probably at the Museum of Scotland in Chambers Street. |

Tunnelling badgers endanger sites on Salisbury Plain (Jan 11 2004 22:57 GMT) - The 94,000-acre Salisbury Plain has 2,500 archaeological sites, more than 300 of them protected by law as Scheduled Ancient Monuments. Since the Ministry of Defence took it over for military exercises in 1897 it has become one of Britain's best protected areas for wildlife and archaeology because little of the land is farmed. The results of an increasing badger population on the plain are badger setts in more than 52 Bronze Age barrows and Iron Age enclosures. They have burrowed into key sites such as the late Bronze Age East Chisenbury Midden. |
