More buried megaliths found at Avebury (Jan 11 2004 23:12 GMT) - Archaeologists have discovered an arc of buried megaliths that once formed part of the great stone circle at Avebury in Wiltshire. The National Trust says the existence of these enormous stones, originally constructed more than 4,500 years ago, has remained a puzzle for the last 300 years. Visitors to Avebury will see most of the standing megaliths in the western half of the stone circle. The famous map of Avebury drawn up by William Stukely in the 1720s showed that many of the stones in the south east and north east quadrants of the circle were missing. Now, the first ever geophysics survey of these areas of Avebury, carried out by the National Trust, has revealed that at least 15 of the megaliths lie buried in the circle itself. |

Not as we do. (Jan 11 2004 23:12 GMT) - The Dutch IND (Immigration and Naturalization Service), noted for its picayune insistence on meticulously legalized foreign paperwork, has been issuing bogus travel documents to rejected Somali asylum-seekers. (Apologies for the poor translation, but I don’t really, like, speak Dutch or anything.) [The bogus documents] are so-called ‘EU laissez-passers. |

Cesta tam a zase zpátky (Jan 11 2004 23:10 GMT) - Tak jsem dneska vezl děti z víkendové návštěvy u mě doma a docela jsem přemýšlel nad smyslem všeho kolem nás. Venku pršelo a mrzlo a cesta byla děsivá. Já měl strach, normální, prostý a směšný strach. Strach, že se něco stane...šílená představa. |

Linux Sound and Music Software (Jan 11 2004 23:10 GMT) - Linux Journal looks at Linux Sound and Music Software."Planet CCRMA and AGNULA are two examples of such projects. Each provides a complete Linux distribution with a kernel optimized for audio performance and a software base of selected sound applications. There are differences between the two projects, but I can say at the start that either or both do just fine if you're interested in getting into the new world of Linux sound software." |

C Coding Tip: Self-Manage Data Buffer Memory (Jan 11 2004 23:10 GMT) - The C programming language defines two standard memory management functions: malloc() and free(). C programmers frequently use those functions to allocate buffers at run time to pass data between functions. In many situations, however, you cannot predetermine the actual sizes required for the buffers, which may cause several fundamental problems for constructing complex C programs. This article advocates a self-managing, abstract data buffer. |
