new york times (Jan 12 2004 04:48 GMT) - Jeff and I have been planning to take a long Valentine's weekend (which turns out to be President's Day weekend as well, a Monday holiday for me) trip to Manhattan, and today we finally got around to doing more than talking about it. Jeff already had tickets to see the Rufus Wainwright concert that weekend, and even now he's plotting out the other shows we hope to see while there: Avenue Q definitely, and probably one or two others from among Wicked (the cast recording to which I downloaded this evening from iTunes, and we're listening to it right now), The Boy From Oz and Rent. I had really wanted to see Take Me Out, but it seems to have closed its run at the Walter Kerr Theater. For now, I've made reservations for us at the Roger Williams, just so we'll be sure to have a place to stay that holiday weekend. |

The Slat Rat Rides Again? (Jan 12 2004 04:48 GMT) - In a fit of, probably, stupid optimism, I bought a pair of these today. They're waxless and not very expensive - certainly not at all like my former high performance ski purchases. All I want to do is putter a little bit on the Coastal Trail. It's killing me not to be able to ski. So, hopefully, these guys will help me scoot around just a smidge and not overdo it. |

books in the house (Jan 12 2004 04:45 GMT) - I was able to free up an extra bookcase in my house by buying some cheap shelves for my dvds (I was holding the camera crooked, it doesn't actually lean): I was able to do some shifting around, and I now actually have a few inches of empty space on a couple shelves, and instead of having my unread books arranged in piles on the floor, I now have an unread books shelf! For a librarian, my personal library is extrememly chaotic. There is no alphabetical order, but somehow the Jim Thompson books all end up lumped together on the same shelf. Non fiction has its own area. |

Skating (Jan 12 2004 04:43 GMT) - Travis came with us skating today downtown in pershing square. We had a fabulous time!! I think we are going back next weekend, since it's a three day weekend and it's the last weekend of the outdoor rink. It was so weird to skate outside when it was about 70 degrees and we were all dying in the heat. I threw a few more photos in my photo gallery - but sadly, my camera battery died - so I didn't get too many - the photo in this post is from Travis's phone - we were resting while they... |

The oil is running out fast...that means the end is near? (Jan 12 2004 04:41 GMT) - "Civilization as we know it is coming to an end soon. This is not the wacky conclusion of a religious cult, but rather the result of diligent analysis sourced by hard data and the scientists who study global “Peak Oil” and related geo-political events. The situation is so dire that even George W. Bush's Energy Adviser, Matthew Simmons, has acknowledged that "the situation is desperate. This is the world's biggest serious question. |
