Re: need help fixing 500 server error name hasn't been defined (Jan 12 2004 04:27 GMT) - Julie, That was the simple step for a search. With the Finder as the frontmost application (click anywhere in the desktop to have the Finder be the frontmost application) go to the File menu and select Find. From there I would search for Radio or UserLand or even weblogData.root or just .root. |

Progress goes "Whoops, crash, tinkle, tinkle!" (Jan 12 2004 04:26 GMT) - With the last wave of crap coming in, I finally decided it was time to close off the comments for older posts to at least minimize the targets. That meant switching to an SQL database from BerkeleyDB, which is OK since I got burned by Debian with BerkeleyDB recently. (An 'upgrade' in Sarge actually backrev'd things leaving me with some version 9 DBs and a library that only understood up to version 8, but that's a separate problem) Since I've been using Postgres at work, I figured I'd switch MT over to postgres. It supports that, right? Well... |

CIL2004 Moblog? (Jan 12 2004 04:25 GMT) - Gizmos and Gadgets at CES - Via Moblog " A group of attendees set up a moblog of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this weekend. CES features all the latest in electronic gear, so this moblog is a window into the hot gear for the coming year. Intel got in on the moblog action, too. Thanks, Shawn!" [Smart Mobs] It's interesting to note Intel's use of moblogging in this context, especially given the fact that it's on the TextAmerica site. |

Hurry up and wait (Jan 12 2004 04:23 GMT) - I have a question for all of you who tailgate me as I'm driving 10 miles an hour over the speed limit, then whip around me, speed up, and stop in front of me at the next traffic light. What are you gaining? The worst ones are the ones who race to get in front of you and then stop at the red light just as it's turning green, keeping you from going through it, something you could have done had they just stayed behind you. The opinions expressed herein are my own personal opinions and do not represent my employer's view in any way. © Copyright 2003-2004, Michael Earls of The Cerebral Kitchen |

Blogs highlighted on Meet the Press (Jan 12 2004 04:19 GMT) - While I am not a huge blog-for-blog-sake person, Meet the Press has a relatively long roundtable discussion on blog and the Democratic presidential campaigns. The talk about how Joe Trippi not only uses the blog to communicate with potential Dean supporters, but how he and others cull ideas from the blogs. This highlight how new innovative ideas can quickly get posted by individuals, culled, and directly or with modification get implemented to better an endeavor. One clever idea that was culled from a weblog was the ability to have individuals share their unused weekend cell phone minutes and have the campaign use these minutes to call voters in Iowa. A rather clever idea and even smarter use of culling the Internet's vast cacophony of voices to find good helpful ideas to run a business/organization better and smarter. |

Habitat Perspectives - geographic visualization project (Jan 12 2004 04:19 GMT) - Marcos Weskamp is developing a Web-based application that tracks volunteer participants in their movements about a city (Tokyo). As he describes it: Habitat perspectives is an online instalation that atempts to visualize spatio-temporaly the places we inhabit. Through GPS-capable mobile phones, participants will be posting geocoded images to an online shared space which starts as a black canvas. As participants post more and more content, a map of the city, and the map of each of the participants "places" will slowly start emerging. |

Can Thomas Friedman speak Arabic? The thought spark ... (Jan 12 2004 04:19 GMT) - Can Thomas Friedman speak Arabic? The thought sparked by a discussion at Matthew Yglesias on Friedman's latest effusions (including in the NY Times January 11) on Middle East affairs.A previous piece of Friedman's nonsense led me (December 4) to assume (by inference from the quality of the product, as well as lack of positive evidence directly on the point) that he did not. Speaking Arabic is a complex notion (touched on in a piece on August 31 2003), there being 12 spoken languages - with a large element of mutual incomprehensibility - as well as a testing written language.Knowledge of any language is not a yes/no proposition: |

(Jan 12 2004 04:19 GMT) - Emily Roebling and Mary Craig Sinclair - a six degrees of separation thing...On September 14 2003, I mentioned the woman who got the Brooklyn Bridge finished as exactly the sort of heroine to get up the noses of the wimmin - the MLA, Jane Austen wacking off, Judith Butler crowd mentioned in pieces earlier in the week: acting as a helpmeet to her sick husband, studying his business to fill his shoes, etc, etc. And, just now, hailed the wife of Bolshie author Upton Sinclair as equally unlikely to find herself voted into any feminist hall of fame any time soon. There is a connection, I see: |
