4th down and out: Title hopes thrown away (Jan 12 2004 08:53 GMT) - Philadelphia - The magic ended not with another rabbit pulled from the post-season hat, not with another opponent sawed in half, not with smiles and bows and curtain calls in a victorious locker room. |

Favre should have spoken for himself (Jan 12 2004 08:53 GMT) - Philadelphia - In good times and bad, Brett Favre has typically been a standup guy. Even when he makes an awful mistake, such as he did Sunday on Green Bay's final offensive play in the 20-17 overtime loss to Philadelphia, he has customarily shown up to accept responsibility, to be accountable. But seconds after David Akers kicked the 31-yard field goal that simultaneously sent the Eagles to the conference championship game and ended the Packers' season, Favre sprinted to the Lincoln Financial Field visitors' locker room. |

Hofmann: Fourth and won? Nope (Jan 12 2004 08:53 GMT) - Philadelphia - Caution chased destiny right out of the stadium Sunday, and there's no telling when it might be visiting the Green Bay Packers again. It took all afternoon for this magic year to disappear, but if you're looking for the play where you could practically see the "Poof!", you don't have to go any further than a certain fourth-and-1 punt. |

Clarke's campaign caught in a countdown (Jan 12 2004 08:53 GMT) - Since even before announcing his campaign for Milwaukee mayor, David A. Clarke Jr. has been the political equivalent of a guy preparing for a big date. He picked out a dashing outfit, polished his car, filled up the tank and even planned out the route to the theater. |

Gould: Preserving city's past or looking to future (Jan 12 2004 08:53 GMT) - How much of our history can we afford to sacrifice as we rebuild Milwaukee? Or, to put it another way, to what extent will inventing a city for the 21st century be hobbled by our warm and fuzzy feelings for the 19th? In the best of circumstances, the choices are not that stark. All over Milwaukee, from the Third Ward to Brewers Hill, from Bay View to the near north side, you will find old buildings handsomely converted to new uses, showing how respect for the past can enrich the present. |

Winter's TV sports could use jolt (Jan 12 2004 08:53 GMT) - Boy, it's cold outside. The windy, winter weather makes it rough on kids playing sports. The ground is rock hard, so touch football is tough. Kicking a soccer ball is like kicking a sack of cement. And anyone crazy enough to try to hit a baseball will get a sting in the fingers that feels like a fistful of bees. |
