ReplayTV Owners Win Partial Victory Over Entertainment Industry (Jan 12 2004 08:45 GMT) - Yet another "partial" victory for users of new technologies against the entertainment industry. A year and a half ago, a group of ReplayTV owners, include Craigslist's Craig Newmark, sued the entertainment industry, asking that they be given legal permission to use the features on their ReplayTV that the industry was suing to block. Specifically, they wanted it declared legal to use "commercial skip" and the "share this show" feature. On Friday, they received a partial victory in that the entertainment industry promised not to sue them for using these features. While the EFF is spinning this as a victory, it really isn't. |

A few odds and ends (Jan 12 2004 08:39 GMT) - Just a random list of thoughts.... Per Adam's request, I've modified my RSS feed to show the full entry instead of just the first 500 words. pMachine by default cuts it off at that point so it took some hacking of the back end files my me so I'm pretty proud I didn't screw it up at the moment. It has been years since I've done anything with CSS....probably like 4 years or more actually so I'm a little rusty and my CSS knowledge is like pre-1. |

SOA OO and AOP (Jan 12 2004 08:39 GMT) - It is said that to compromise is a road for happiness for all concerned. When two or more parties clash, they should compromise. When dealing with software design choices, we are often at odds with others. There are many debatable choices. Can a combined solution actually be better than one or the other solutions? |

Missing The Point On Online Video (Jan 12 2004 08:37 GMT) - The fine folks over at McKinsey are trying to solve the "problem of video piracy" with a few simple suggestions: TV and movie studios should team up with broadband providers to provide content, broadband companies should "crack down" on big file traders and computer companies should lock down their machines. There are a ton of reasons why these ideas make no sense, but the real issue here is that McKinsey is solving the wrong "problem". The problem isn't video "piracy", but an industry that is trying to hold onto a business model that doesn't work in the world today. Building up artificial barriers to enforce that business model doesn't solve anything. |

Danish troops find WMD in Iraq? UPDATE! (Jan 12 2004 08:36 GMT) - CNN says that Danish troops may have found real WMD in Iraq. They have found what seems to be around 40 grenades containing some kind of liquid. These grenades are probably remains of hidden weapons from the Iran Iraq war in the eighties. Nevertheless - if they are what it looks like they are - Bush will have gotten his "smoking gun". It may come as a surprise to you to learn that Denmark is part of the Iraq war coalition. |

Sean, First off, I do stand correcte... (Jan 12 2004 08:36 GMT) - Sean, First off, I do stand corrected on my assertion that NASA invented “Velcro” – I was mistaken on that and I admit it. I do believe NASA had something to do with enhancing Velcro for some reason, but I am not able to verify this. The point still stands, however, that NASA’s work over the years has led to the development of some pretty outstanding technologies. It frustrates me greatly when critics yell out, “What the hell has our space program done for us? It doesn’t contribute to *real* science. |
