The little cares which fretted me (Jan 12 2004 17:27 GMT) - The little cares which fretted me, I lost them yesterday Among the fields, above the sea, Among the winds at play; Among the lowing of the herds, The rustling of the trees, Among the singing of the birds, The humming of the bees. The foolish fears of what may come, I cast them all away Among the clover scented grass, Among the new mown hay; Among the hushing of the corn, Where drowsing poppies nod, Ill thoughts can die, and good be born, Out in the fields of God. [Elizabeth Barrett Browning]... |

Missing The Point On Online Video (Jan 12 2004 17:25 GMT) - The fine folks over at McKinsey are trying to solve the "problem of video piracy" with a few simple suggestions: TV and movie studios should team up with broadband providers to provide content, broadband companies should "crack down" on big file traders and computer companies should lock down their machines. There are a ton of reasons why these ideas make no sense, but the real issue here is that McKinsey is solving the wrong "problem". The problem isn't video "piracy", but an industry that is trying to hold onto a business model that doesn't work in the world today. Building up artificial barriers to enforce that business model doesn't solve anything. |

Technology Of Tomorrow Might, For Once,Be Available Tomorrow (Jan 12 2004 17:25 GMT) - Converged and networked technologies in the household have been talked about for ages, and were always "just around the corner", which turned out to be a lot farther than most industry insiders predicted. Now, however, there are some indications that all these technologies of tomorrow might really be available in the near future. The article linked here discusses four reasons why this is happening, but I think quite a bit of it is due to the rise of open, standard wireless technologies that make it much easier to connect things. That one advancement, alone, helps to explain the other three reasons: computing showing up in more products, computing companies moving into consumer electronics, and companies paying attention to what customers want - rather than telling them what they should want. |
