"Translation Lie" Bites USA Today (Jan 12 2004 18:23 GMT) - Top reporter resigns over translation lie: A Pulitzer-nominated reporter from USA Today has resigned after admitting he misled superiors in verifying the accuracy of a translation. Kelley told the Post that during USA Today's probe, he had allowed a translator who was not present during a 1999 interview in Belgrade to call the paper's in-house investigator and impersonate another translator who had been there. |

Blogger News Item (Jan 12 2004 18:22 GMT) - Did we need any more evidence of how wildly out of touch the media is? Yesterday, four Iowa papers announced their endorsements for the Democratic nomination. (The crucial Iowa caucus is now seven days away. And by the way, you can still join me in Iowa this weekend.) The most important paper by far, The Des Moines Register, picked John Edwards. |

Taxes up again (Jan 12 2004 18:22 GMT) - The reasoning is clear and simple: if you drive a car, you must have too much money for your own good. It is time that HMG relieved you of some of this burden: Motorists convicted of speeding may have to pay compensation for victims, the government has proposed. The plan, published on Monday, is one of several changes to the funding of victim support services. |

The Tablet PC Get Together at CES was a great opportunity for members of the Tablet PC community to get to know each other and share their interest in the Tablet PC. |

Marlborough Mound (Fieldnotes by Jane) (Jan 12 2004 18:22 GMT) - ...but climb it and it seems even larger still. Phew -whee! As you climb, its spiralling terraced design and construction become more apparent and from the top its bulk is quite overwhelming and makes the ugly school buildings seem tiny. Lurking in a dip at the top of the mound is a huge ugly water tank and a kilny/chimney thing. I wondered if it was a rudimentary crematorium for disposing the bodies of schoolboys who'd been thrashed to death by an over-zealous master. |

War College Study Calls Iraq ... (Jan 12 2004 18:20 GMT) - War College Study Calls Iraq a 'Detour'. Bounding the Global War on TerrorismOf particular concern, has been the conflation of al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein's Iraq as a single, undifferentiated threat.
