Wes Clark Stands Firm on Abortion. (Jan 12 2004 18:19 GMT) - A few days ago, Wesley Clark made a blanket statement that if elected to the Presidency, he would support abortions up to the moment of birth and would not appoint “pro-life” judges. At the time, I didn’t think it was possible for a politician to be as politically clumsy as... |

Programming Java threads in the real world, Part 2 - The perils of race conditions, deadlock, and other threading problems (Jan 12 2004 18:19 GMT) - This article, the second in a multipart series on threads, discusses the perils that can arise when you approach multithreading in a naive way. As is the case with the entire series, this article assumes reader familiarity with the basic thread-related parts of Java: the synchronized keyword and monitors, wait(), notify(), the basics of using the Thread class, and so forth. Here, Allen focuses on the more advanced problems encountered when programming Java threads in the real world. |

Programming Java threads in the real world, Part 1 - A Java programmer's guide to threading architectures (Jan 12 2004 18:19 GMT) - Programming Java threads isn't nearly as easy (or as platform-independent) as most books would have you believe, and all Java programs that use the AWT are multithreaded. This article is the first in a series that discusses the things you need to know to program threads in the real world. The article assumes you understand the language-level support for threads (the synchronized keyword, how monitors work, the wait() and notify() methods, and so on) and focuses on the legion of problems that arise when you try to use these language features. |

Create client-side user interfaces in HTML, Part 1 - Make the JEditorPane useful (Jan 12 2004 18:19 GMT) - This article presents a variant on Swing's JEditorPane that makes it possible to specify an entire screen of your client-side user interface (UI) in HTML. JEditorPane is designed to let you put an HTML text component inside a dialog box, not to specify the entire contents of the dialog box in HTML. In practice, this class makes it vastly easier to create complex user interfaces than does Swing/Abstract Window Toolkit (AWT)'s standard containment-and-layout-manager architecture. |

Strategy for success (Jan 12 2004 18:19 GMT) - The Strategy design pattern embodies two fundamental tenets of object-oriented (OO) design: encapsulate the concept that varies and program to an interface, not an implementation. In this article, David Geary shows how to use the Strategy pattern to implement an extensible design. |

Microsoft retail project taps into RFID (Jan 12 2004 18:17 GMT) - Microsoft said Monday that it established a new project aimed at providing next-generation technology to retailers, including emerging wireless applications such as radio frequency identification. The announcement, made as part of the ongoing National Retail Federation (NRF) convention in New York, targets development of applications for nearly every aspect of the retail universe, from shopping to inventory management. Dubbed as the Smarter Retailing Initiative, the effort promises to deliver tools that allow retailers to interact with customers, improve operations management and incorporate emerging wireless technology. Microsoft said that software built under the effort would be based on its .Net Web services framework and would have an interface to existing products. |

Microsoft angered by HP's iTunes move (Jan 12 2004 18:17 GMT) - HP's move to release an own-branded digital-music player based on Apple's iPod – and to ship iTunes pre-installed on all HP PCs – has angered Microsoft. General manager of Microsoft's Windows digital media division David Fester has suggested that iTunes' emerging dominance would be bad for consumers, because it would limit them to the iPod. He told journalists at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas: "Windows is about choice - you can mix and match software and music player stuff. We believe you should have the same choice when it comes to music services. |

Ballmer Unbound (Jan 12 2004 18:17 GMT) - Steve Ballmer is a man whose reputation exceeds him. Barrel-chested and bombastic, he's always been the quintessential, larger-than-life, rah-rah leader, and the perfect foil for his geeky and erudite best buddy, Bill Gates. Stories abound of his over-the-top antics rallying Microsoft's troops at corporate events: There was the infamous Monkey-Boy dance he performed at a sales meeting a few years ago, which prompted dozens of incredulous Microsoft bashers to post choppy videoclips of his cavortings on the web; or the surgery he endured to repair blown-out vocal cords resulting from a bout of unrestrained cheerleading; |
