The Day the Babies Crawled Away (Jan 12 2004 18:34 GMT) - In case any of you were waiting with bated breath... The Tale of Despereaux, by Kate Dicamillo, just won this year's Newbery Medal. And you may remember me enthusing about it two months ago.The Man Who Walked Between the Towers, by Mordicai Gerstein, garnered the Caldecott. I haven't read it yet (still in processing). |

March Upcountry (Jan 12 2004 18:34 GMT) - I am a huge sucker for space marines, plasma cannons, and aliens, so March Upcountry hits the spot. David Weber and John Ringo team up to provide a fast-paced and well-plotted space opera with lots of action and interesting characters. |

Oath of Swords (Jan 12 2004 18:34 GMT) - Oath of Swords by David Weber: Weber detours into fantasy and does a credible job of it. Not great but solid. It’s always good to see an author do something interesting with the trolls, dwarves, and elves concept. |

All the Pretty Horses (Jan 12 2004 18:34 GMT) - I haven't been able to muster much enthusiam for All the Pretty Horses since I realized that John Grady/Matt Damon was going to, of all things, fall in love with Alejandra/Penelope Cruz. In a Cormac McCarthy novel?! I suspect McCarthy started taking Prozac before writing this thing. Gone are the dark malignant characters, the bad conscience, the vermiculate prose: all those things you pay the $13. |

Dead Right (Jan 12 2004 18:34 GMT) - As David Frum points out in Dead Right, our country faced similar problems during the first two decades of this century. Frum reminds us that our grandparents grew up in cities that, like our own, were violent and unruly. A tide of legal and illegal immigration was bringing to our shores a horde that did not speak our language, did not share our customs, and felt little loyalty to our country. This resulted in an urban proletariat that was not only of unprecedented size, but also poor, violent, ... |

Future Shock (Jan 12 2004 18:34 GMT) - An experience over the last few days has rekindled my interest in Alvin Toffler's book Future Shock. Making some adjustments to the day-to-day business of life again brought home to me just how complex our civilization has become. For example, we don't just have a telephone anymore. Now we have the landline, the cell phone, the fax, the DSL, and probably several others that I'm not thinking of. Another example: |

Down and Out in Paris and London (Jan 12 2004 18:34 GMT) - This is the first of a two-part Salon piece on working at a dead-end customer service job in North Carolina. This genre of memoir is really compelling to me, maybe because I'm so thankful to not have a job like that, but also because it's the 21st Century equivalent of Orwell's labor-condition memoirs like Down and Out in Paris and London and The Road to Wigan Pier. |

Bang! Getting Your Message Heard in A Noisy World (Jan 12 2004 18:34 GMT) - Bang! Getting Your Message Heard in A Noisy World, is a book by the CEO and vie president of the New York advertising firm KTG, Linda Kaplan Thaler and Robin Koval, plus a third author, Delia Marshal, who was not identified so I assume she was a ghost writer of sorts. The book is billed as a manual of sorts for advertising agencies to be affective at creating memorable ads that actually increase business. |

Flash Enabled: Flash Design and Development for Devices (Jan 12 2004 18:34 GMT) - Many sources (such as Flash Enabled: Flash Design & Development for Devices) suggest that searching for PPC in the user agent string is a safe way to detect a Pocket PC. The Collector Collector: A Novel (Jan 12 2004 18:34 GMT) - Fischer's fiction is a decidedly mixed bag - his debut Under the Frog was a promising, if conventional, first novel based on the heady days of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution; after that came my favorite of his books, The Thought Gang, a wooly, hilarious shaggy dog romp that he's never quite surpassed; then some duds, The Colllector Collector and his collection of short stories. I've just started reading Voyage to the End of the Room, so I'm reserving judgement. But I do admire his tireless prom ... |
