O'Neill throwing himself into reverse (Jan 14 2004 02:59 GMT) - Since Ron Suskind?s alleged tell-all book has come out, Paul O?Neill, the ex-treasury secretary whose revelations the book is based on, has taken to the talk-show circuit in an attempt to disavow many of the more sensational quotes from the book. James Joyner is among those noting O?Neill? |

Words, words, words (Jan 14 2004 02:55 GMT) - Ian went to bed last night with a sore throat, and woke me up middle of the night to say he thought he was coming down with a cold. Gave me some psychosomatic symptoms (after all, my head's on the pillow beside his, breathing in all his exhaled cold germs) and kept me awake part of the morning. I guzzled down OJ and hot tea with breakfast and seemed to escape the worst. Unfortunately, Ian's still unwell. At any rate... |

First Post (Jan 14 2004 02:55 GMT) - My first blog entry, I am excited. Not sure what this is supposed to be about actually, I guess just to keep myself sane and document some of interesting, or not so interesting, stuff that I do, work on, learn, etc. How is a blog different from a journal? Is it supposed to be? Maybe someone can answer that for me before I go nuts here and start ranting about how my boyfriend slept with my sister, my best friend, and my dog. |

Sexual Services for the Disabled. ... (Jan 14 2004 02:52 GMT) - Sexual Services for the Disabled. When the taboos of prostitution and sex of the disabled meet, there's bound to be plenty of controversy. In Germany, the Dutch prostitute Nina de Vries stands at the center of this debate. She offers erotic massages to mentally retarded clients and trains others to do the same. Recently she attempted to create a network of sexual caregivers in Zurich and was rebuffed. |

Alan Greenspan Says That the 2001 Tax Cut Was a Mistake (Jan 14 2004 02:50 GMT) - People like me who have enormous respect for the intelligence and judgment of Alan Greenspan have long been puzzled at his approval of the Bush administration's 2001 tax cut. It never fit our picture of who the man was and what he thought. Now, thanks to Paul O'Neill's reports of his discussions with Greenspan, we have a satisfactory answer: Alan Greenspan said at the time that the 2001 tax cut was a mistake: p. |

HIV/AIDS Prevention and Intervention: Social Medicine (Jan 14 2004 02:47 GMT) - The HIV problem among minorities, specifically among African Americans is fundamentally a social issue. One cannot expect to see a marked decrease in infection rates among blacks without implementing programs that address the social ills that pervade this particular community. For example, and this is only one of many... The problem of dislocated fathers, (some by choice and some due to incaceration) single mothers are attempting to raise families alone. A single parent household in the AA community is often times a breeding ground for teenage pregnancy and/or drug use and abuse - not to mention juvenile crime. |

The multilevel nature of behavior: a cornerstone for study & intervention (Jan 14 2004 02:47 GMT) - We often speak of the behavior of molecules and of the behavior of planets orbiting our Sun. HIV Infection (Jan 14 2004 02:47 GMT) - I agree with Joel. The HIV pandemic has surpassed catastrophic proportions. BBC to broadcast silent orchestra. ... (Jan 14 2004 02:47 GMT) - BBC to broadcast silent orchestra. The BBC is to broadcast a live radio performance of an orchestra playing four-and-a-half minutes of silence. John Cage's seminal work 4'33" will be the highlight of a concert on Radio 3. The piece consists of four minutes and 33 seconds' worth of nothing. [Ananova] Recently I pointed to some discussions on the fate of classical recording, in which the point was made that there really hasn't been much worth recording written in the last hundred years. |
