Socially Unacceptable (Jan 31 2004 17:59 GMT) - So I walked into Borders today, checked their little book thingy, and then hastily searched the appropriate section. Drat; it wasn't on the shelf. But supposedly, it was in stock? I approached customer service. |

Room-To-Read builds and stocks school libraries in Asia (Jan 31 2004 17:59 GMT) - In 1998, Microsoft executive John Wood trekked to Nepal, intending merely to slip on his backpack and get close to real life for a few weeks. After visiting a village library whose collection of no more than 20 books was considered too precious to circulate, Wood was inspired to quit Microsoft and start up the philanthropic organization Room-To-Read. Room-To-Read provides "challenge grants" to communities in India, Nepal, Vietnam and Cambodia for the construction of school libraries (and in some cases the schools themselves), and for the books to go in them. Because the people in these communities must raise at least 50 percent of project funds themselves, schools and their libraries have a greater chance of continued success. Wood's hometown paper, The Evening Times in Sayre, PA, has a nice profile of him and the organization. |

Blume's lt;emgt;Deenielt;/emgt; still controversial after 30 years (Jan 31 2004 17:59 GMT) - Here's a story from the St. Petersburg [FL] Times in which author Judy Blume defends her novel Deenie against its latest challenge. Blume recommends that the people who want to restrict young people's access to the book, based on a few passages in which the young adolescent title character explores her sexuality, talk to the children who might read it before making a final decision. She suggests that it's the adults, not the youngsters, who find something inappropriate about the topics in Deenie. Blume rejects the contention of some Hernando County school board members that she wrote the book, published 30 years ago, to "push buttons. |

THEOLOGICAL OPEN THREAD (Jan 31 2004 17:56 GMT) - Here's a theological conundrum for you. When spammers and comment spammers die, do they go to the same circle of hell, or do they have separate ones? And how are spammers punished in the afterlife? I'm thinking something like the... |

Mutilated1: When Will Slayer Decide To Retire? (Death Metal Mayhem) (Jan 31 2004 17:56 GMT) - I don't think their next album will suck, but I notice that a lot of people didn't care for their last album. I liked it, but I think everyone will admit Slayer has seen better days. I wish Slayer would step up to the challenge and kill again though, I know they are scared to tour with Cannibal Corpse and everything, but they're really not what they once were. Maybe it is time for them to hang it up ? |

one more day until the SuperBowl (Jan 31 2004 17:54 GMT) - Jo worked until 9pm last night. This morning she got up early to get to work by 8am. They are having a lot of SuperBowl activities in the downtown area. I thought I would get over there before everything started and traffic got bad to take a few pics. I mean I couldn't have the SuperBowl happening in my own backyard and not get a few pics. |
