I failed the Turing Test (Jan 31 2004 23:46 GMT) - To try and help stem the tide of spam comments here, I recently upgraded my version of Movable Type and am going to instal the MT-Blacklist app, which tries to automatically block spam. But for a while there, I was fighting the spam simply by manually blocking the IP addresses of any spambot that posted here. The spambots tend to post in enormous packs: One will find my a blog, discover that it's open to post to, then leave about 200 postings in the different items. So if you're the blog publisher and you see the first few postings go up by the 'bot, you can quickly ban its IP address and shut it down. |

Finding Alternative Products (Jan 31 2004 23:45 GMT) - Steve Hannaford has answered my call for alternatives to HP laser printers. Steve writes the increasingly popular Oligopoly Watch weblog, but in his day job he is an editor for Better Buys for Business, the best source of comparative data if you're looking to purchase new office equipment. For anyone who's interested I settled on the Brother HL-6050DN, a Better Buys Editor's Choice. This little workgroup laser printer has more features than the "other" printer I was considering and sells for several hundred dollars less. The guides, ranging in price from $30 to $40, are overkill if you just want an inexpensive desktop printer. |

Blogger News Item (Jan 31 2004 23:45 GMT) - I just spent a little time looking at other weblogs that contain links to Hoggs Blog. For the most part these are fringe "national" blogs with high readership, one of my very favorites being Allied (Jeanene Sessums) who makes me laugh an/or cry and/or think everytime I go there. It occurs to me that the reason that I keep going back to Jeanene (and her friend Halley) is because they amuse me, enlighten me, inform me and I get the feeling that I know them better and better each time I visit and am the better for each visit. |

Blogger News Item (Jan 31 2004 23:45 GMT) - Perhaps you haven't seen this video of an Apache helicopter ripping apart three guys in a field in Iraq yet. It should be sobering, although I've seen lots of stupid comments about it on the net from a bunch of fools who don't understand that it could just as easily have been them ("I love watching sand niggers die" and the like). See, the thing is, so what if Koresh and his followers didn't get taken out by helicopter gunships. |

I'm close enough to my mother now that I can help her with some tasks she's not quite up for. I'm in more of a rural setting too, which suits me just fine for now. I reopened the FEAR OF THUNDER file today and made a little headway. The sticky wicket has been how best to introduce Remo into the mix. |

Sandals (Jan 31 2004 23:41 GMT) - Here come the interesting links of the day along with a few articles from the current issue of Die Zeit. It's very strange: Some weeks the whole paper seems pretty boring and in other weeks they have not one but quite a few interesting reports to read. In a sidenote, Nicholas Riley mentions that Apple's script menu doesn't only take AppleScripts but also shell scripts. Cool, very useful, very easy and more than I had expected. |
