~~~~~~~ GOSHINKA MATSURI Saturday night to... (Feb 02 2004 01:59 GMT) - ~~~~~~~GOSHINKA MATSURISaturday night took the gondola upmountain through the downgliding mists to see the Goshinka Matsuri, held each year at this time atop Horai-san (Mountain of Heavenly Beauty is one translation), so named after the apocryphal peak whence Buddha ascended into the great hereafter. I'd seen the fireworks every year from the house, but had never gone up to see the event itself. The Shinto festival (the Japanese mix religions with spiritual aplomb), held at one end of the ski area, involved a fire ceremony calling upon the gods to preserve nature, watch over the mountains and protect mountain lovers like the thousands of folks who were up there in the clouds taking part on skis or on foot (me), every one of them dressed for the occasion far better than yours truly, who wore merely mid-mountain clothes, as per my level of residence, and had worked up a good sweat by walking part of the way up, so arrived, in a manner of speaking, on the arctic scene in my bathing suit fresh from the beach. I therefore spent a lot of time going from heat source to heat source in between watching thousands of skiers suddenly stop still to watch the goings-on here and there; then came the fireworks that filled the raggedly rolling mists with washes of all colors like a Whistler dream in the sky (BTW, Whistler always wanted to visit Japan; |
No Such Thing As Evolution (Feb 02 2004 01:58 GMT) - United States: School officials in Georgia are trying to find new and interesting ways to educate children without pissing off the loony fundies from the creationist camp. But changing the term evolution to biological changes over time needs a bit more work as the plan has enraged everyone. New middle and high school science standards proposed by state Schools Superintendent Kathy Cox strike references to evolution and replace them with the term biological changes over time, a revision critics say will further weaken learning in a critical subject. Outraged teachers already have told the state it is undercutting the science education of young Georgians. |
Tip for Library PCs (Feb 02 2004 01:58 GMT) - How to Get Spyware-free RealPlayer through the BBC "Martin sez, 'The BBC made a unique deal with Real Networks which disposes of their spyware tactics. Basically, if a user clicks on a link to download Real Player from a BBC website, the referrer script sends them to a page where they can download an expiry-free, spyware-free and nuicance-free version of the player. It's because the BBC have such a stringent public service remit, that it was offensive to charge people a license fee for BBC content, then make them pay all over again for the facility to view/listen to it.' Link (Thanks, Martin!)" [Boing Boing Blog] An excellent choice for libraries that want to install Real without all of the bloat. |
Livin' on the edge (Feb 02 2004 01:57 GMT) - I didn't really start to grow up to be a computer-intensive geek. Left to myself, I would have happily become computer-literate, able to navigate text-based file structures and type in command-line commands with a cheat sheet, but would never have gotten into programming or anything beyond cut and paste, click and drag. I was quickly becoming a science fiction fan, for the stories; I wasn't in tune with the fan culture (mostly because I was shy and avoided people and had never met a Real Grown-up Fan). When I was 15, in 1995, I met pyrogenic. |
Trickle, Trickle, Trickle (Feb 02 2004 01:57 GMT) - Iran has had free elections where reformers were elected? I don't think so. The Islamofascist oligarchy won't allow anyone on the ballot who would act for reform. Khatami is no reformer. While he does sometimes call for free speech, he at all times shows loyalty to the Islamofascist regime. |
