On being an international student so close to home (Feb 12 2004 20:59 GMT) - The University of Toronto is as close to home as I have been while in post-secondary education. There are almost no direct flights, but the total flight time isn't more than two hours, and the airport connections are fairly convenient on both ends. I'm only an hour and a half from the US border, and a large portion of my circle of friends here in town are Americans as well. Indeed, possible half of the Centre for Medieval Studies is comprised of Americans. As a Midwesterner, my accent blends in tolerably well. |

the key is real, the lock is not (Feb 12 2004 20:59 GMT) - In the movie The Game part of the plot centered around a (simulated) "attack" on a rich man (Michael Douglas) that forced him to give up the passwords and such to his bank accounts by intercepting the cell phone call and answering it, pretending to be the bank. The basic idea (make the environment familiar enough so that you slip up) has been used online in various forms, but so far any attentive person could figure out that things were not what they seemed. Don has posted about an unsettling idea he calls visual spoofing. Essentially he's exposing the biggest threat of all: that we end up becoming used to our UIs to the point where we trust them implicitly. |

Apple 'forcefully' opposes Sony-BMG merger plan (Feb 12 2004 20:57 GMT) - "Apple, the US computer company behind the iTunes music service, has become the latest group to oppose the proposed deal between Sony Music and BMG, the recorded music arm of Germany's Bertelsmann media group.
