Water and salt consumption guidelines (Feb 12 2004 23:33 GMT) - Last year I reported on a paper from the American Journal of Physiology that dispelled the myth that people should drink eight glasses of water per day. Now this has been supported by another study published by the Institute of Medicine. The new report recommends that thirst be the main motivator for drinking more. One of the urban myths of water consumption was that if you are thirsty, you are already dehydrated. This study helps put that myth to rest. |

Deep Thoughts (Feb 12 2004 23:33 GMT) - I just don't believe that people choose to be gay. I myself am hetero (if I'd been gay people in my life would have discovered it by now), but I have dear friends who are homosexual, and it wasn't like one morning they woke up and said, 'I'm going to be gay!” |

Introduction to Computer Graphics (Feb 12 2004 23:31 GMT) - Introduction to Computer Graphics, by Foley et al, published by Addison Wesley. This abridged version of Computer Graphics: Principles and Practices (from Addison Wesley’s Systems Programming series) is an outstanding introduction to both 2D and 3D computer graphics. There are plenty of equations and theory for the mathematician, but even better for folks like me (hackers), there is a nice sprinkling of C code and example images. |

Can You Get TOO Usable? (Of Blinders and Peanut Jars) (Feb 12 2004 23:31 GMT) - Quote: "However, what troubles me about some discussions of usability is the assumption that "it's all about the user and what the user wants". Well, certainly the user is vital, but even more vital is achieving the aims of the company. If the site somehow satisfies users but does not achieve the company's aims, what good is it to the company? In fact, the whole point of including usability is to achieve the company's aims via the user. |

Windows source code is out (Feb 12 2004 23:31 GMT) - Slashdot is reporting that Windows 2000 and NT source code has leaked to the Internet. How did I learn about this? Someone behind me at the O'Reilly conference told their neighbor about it. The other big conversation that is happening here? John Kerry's rumored affair, as reported by the Drudge Report. |

ATOM moving to IETF (Feb 12 2004 23:30 GMT) - Ross nails my position completely! [SOURCE:ATOM moving to IETF via Random Bytes]QUOTESam Ruby has announced that development of the Atom specification is moving to the IETF. This is great news. I've been less than enthusiastic about the Atom specification development (ASD1) effort for a couple of reasons. |
