Cinema :: La Meglio Gioventu' (The Best Of Youth) (Parts 1 and 2) (Feb 16 2004 23:36 GMT) - an italian take on our friends in the north, originally made as a mini-series for italian tv but here wrapped up into two films playing back-to-back. covering nearly forty years in just over six hours, the story conecentrates on two brothers, nicola and matteo carati and the friends, family and lovers in their lives, all set against historical events - mental health care scandals, floods in florence, student riots, economic boom and bust, mafia corruption, red brigade terrorism, football matches etc. in places desperately sad - director marco tullio giordana creates a series of characters you genuinely care about, kills some of them, puts others through great pain - the best of youth is generally uplifting, offering a picture of hope in which, despite the society in which they live, each generation gets a bit further in life than the one before it. as an italian film with a social commentary it will obviously recall lucchino visconti, particularly rocco and his brothers and the leopard. |
