Rubhub, an XFN relationship lookup engine (Feb 20 2004 01:59 GMT)

- I forgot I submitted myself to this, but it appears I'm finally active on Rubhub. This is kind of cool. Except, of course, for the fact that most of the people I put down as knowing aren't, in fact, doing the same back. C'mon, it's not that hard - heck, if you use Blosxom, Buzz's plugin does it for you. Make yourselves XFN-friendly!

An autoxfn issue (Feb 20 2004 01:59 GMT)

- Buzz has created a neat little Blosxom plugin that I mentioned earlier, Autoxfn. What it does is parse out a simple tab-delimited textfile of the type Buzz Andersen scifihifi.com acquaintance colleague and then use that info to make your links compatible with the XFN. This is all well and good, but I'm having a slight problem. No matter which order I tell the plugins 'autoxfn' and 'blogroll' to load in, my autoxfn info never seems to make it onto the blogroll - just as an example, check the links to Buzz in this article, then the link to Buzz's weblog (Scifihifi.

A little explanation may be in place. oh here it goes <explanation> The other night I was actually working on a semi decent post for it (which miraculously got deleted by blogger) and I took some time to look back at my other posts on there.

- To Whom It May Concern: It is with great regret that I feel that I must resign from posting on Interalia.org (philulrich.com) Certain occurences have caused me to have feel akward associating with Phil (whom I love dearly and will miss even though my time spent with him has been short) and any other of my friends and aquaintances. I would like to thank everyone involved with this page for putting up with my poetry, giberish and overall foolishness and maybe even a few words from my heart (which tend to end up in all those categories actually) Thanks for not tearing me a new one by means of critism or telling Phil to "get that crazy new guy off the page".

Why tax the Church of Colby? (Feb 20 2004 01:58 GMT)

- Cosh writes: "I've never been able to understand the appeal of the 'secular humanist' brand of unbelief. It carries on business, holding meetings and performing weddings and funerals, as an atheistic alternative to the social functions of religion. It is, essentially, church without the metaphysical comforts of God. As such, it is arguably far more lunatic than believing in God without joining a church.

Killings Spotlight Detroit's Violent Side (Feb 20 2004 01:58 GMT)

- Just as a steady decline of killings in the Motor City was taking the sting out of the old "Murder City" epithet, a recent spike in homicides - including two police officers this week - seems to indicate that the culture of violence is far from defeated.

- California: prisons reform bills introduced in Senate[The subject last looked at here on February 11.]The LA Times today brings news of modest and conditional progress: the champions of prisons reform in the California legislature, State Sens Gloria Romero and Jackie Speier, have introduced bills (SB 1342 and SB 1352) to create an independent prisons watchdog (the current Office of the Inspector General is not independent) and protect its budget (slashed under Gray Davis for obvious reasons).Ranged against them are the colony of trained seals that surround them:

Outsourcing is a Fad (Feb 20 2004 01:55 GMT)

- The low percentage of stores able to convince 2 customers that they were very satisfied brings to mind one of the key weaknesses of the outsourcing fad. There are 2 sides to profit generation: controlling costs and increasing revenue. Outsourcing addresses the first, but often at the expense of the second, which is why it will be a passing fad.

Notebooks to dial up built-in phones (Feb 20 2004 01:55 GMT)

- Intel is now pushing computer makers to build phones directly into laptops. At first, I wondered why this was necessary, since it's easy enough to install a softphone - but they're actually talking about the hardware aspect. The idea is that on the cover of the laptop, you'd have a screen and phone buttons, and the system could be used even if the computer was in sleep mode. Initially, the phone would be a VoIP phone, but they also want to add cellular service. The screen also will integrate with some email programs so you could check your email without opening up the computer.
