Confessions of a Welfare Queen (Feb 29 2004 04:34 GMT) - Ronald Reagan memorably complained about "welfare queens," but he never told us that the biggest welfare queens are the already wealthy. Their lobbyists fawn over politicians, giving them little bits of money -- campaign contributions, plane trips, dinners, golf outings -- in exchange for huge chunks of taxpayers’ money. Millionaires who own your favorite sports teams get subsidies, as do millionaire farmers, corporations, and well-connected plutocrats of every variety. Even successful, wealthy TV journalists. 20 years late - - but 1984 is coming to the U.S. of A. (Feb 29 2004 04:32 GMT) - President's Radio Address February 28...I have asked Congress to provide an additional $23 million for high schools who want to develop and carry out drug testing programs. This is ludicrous. At what point will the intrusions into the lives of ordinary people, students in this case, south of the border end? Hauling a random kid, or group of kids, out of class so they can go pee in a bottle to prove to their teachers that they're not taking any sort of drugs should be considered a violation... |

Liner Notes (Feb 29 2004 04:31 GMT) - I don't normally read books for fun during the semester, but Jessie lent me a book and I started reading it. I limited myself to a chapter a day, but last night I got sucked in. I read half of what I hadn't already read and then I just finished the book now. Its about so much and it is so wonderful. Its about growing up and finding yourself and your life and your loved ones and your past. |

Stars and Stripes Triumphant (Feb 29 2004 04:31 GMT) - Stars & Stripes ForeverDel Rey, 1999Stars and Stripes in PerilDel Rey, 2001Stars and Stripes TriumphantDel Rey, 2003by Harry HarrisonAm alternate history, asking, what if the British, interfering in the American Civil War, united the North and South against them? The details of technology and strategy take center stage in this trilogy. While these are important, the cultural differences between Americans and English of the 1860s could have used some more fleshing out. While these three books are ... |

Yay! A Snow Day (Feb 29 2004 04:31 GMT) - Perhaps the biggest mistake I've ever made is assuming I'm not good enough as I am. Blindly assuming I had to be something more for the masses. Ok. That's dramatic. Because, really, the masses don't care who I am. |

Myles Before Myles (Feb 29 2004 04:31 GMT) - Reading the Orton letters I was reminded that Brian O'Nolan debuted his pseudonym "Flann O'Brien" in a 1939 letter to the Irish Times. Over the course of a year, and with help from friends, O'Nolan carried on several debates on the letters page of the paper, which proved so popular with readers that the editor invited him to write a column. (Not a bad note to end a Friday on. Next week I plan to shake my late tendency to long quotation.) Sir, I was interested in "H. |

The Secret Reader: 501 Sonnets (Feb 29 2004 04:31 GMT) - Maybe it is. But I think of a story Willis Barnstone tells, in the introduction to his The Secret Reader: 501 Sonnets, about his work with Borges, translating Borges's sonnets. They had a very friendly working relationship, but one night, instead of calling or visiting himself, Borges sent a messenger about a particular rhyme: "Borges thinks you should try harder. |

Springing : New and Selected Poems (Feb 29 2004 04:31 GMT) - Although I'm not writing the nearly daily sonnets anymore, I still plan to try the themes suggested here, even, I think, the one on drowning New Orleans. Next up on the list, the figure of the heart, was suggested by Chris Murray. Unfortunately for me, two books I'd ordered, Marie Ponsot's The Bird Catcher and Springing: New and Selected Poems, were waiting for me when I got home yesterday, and I found this: |

The Handmade Soap Book (Feb 29 2004 04:31 GMT) - What I was too daft to realise before was that the lye curdled the milk, making the soap itself curdle a bit. I had a think about it this morning, and read over Melinda Coss' notes on milk (keep in mind that I was using her recipes) and she suggested warming the milk up to room temp before adding the lye to avoid curdling. |

Sex Money Kiss (Feb 29 2004 04:31 GMT) - Bad Books signingsI was in the Virgin Megastore on Michigan Ave last night and there was evidently a signing going on. Seemed to be quite a crowd of enthusiasts there, including some strange people who had plonked a couple of chairs opposite the rostrum to stare at the passing line of fans. I couldn't work out who it was, looked like an aging rock-star possibly turned poet of some kind. It actually looked like Jerry Sadowitz, but that was frankly impossible. Tried to wrack my brains, but have f ... |
