Taking the Ethics out of Bioethics (Feb 29 2004 05:03 GMT) - ....and so on Friday the Bush Administration dismissed two members of the Council on Bioethics, an advisory group created in 2001 to "advise" Gee Dub on bioethical issues largely as an outcome of battles over stem cell research. The two dismissed members - Elizabeth Blackburn, a reknowned biologist at University of California - San Francisco and William May, professor emeritus of eithics at Southern Methodist University - have both expressed views on embryonic research and other issues of biotechnology that ran counter to those of Chairman Leon Kass, an eithicist at the University of Chicago and an ardent opponent to embryonic stem cell research. Although the terms of all council members had expired, only these two holders of a minority viewpoint supporting such things as embryonic stem cell research were replaced. Three new members have been named who hold opinions more in line with those of the Chairman. Once again we come face to face with behavior by an administration so unburdened by the challenging demands of integrity that it can't even be bothered to concoct some suitable lie to cover its tracks. |

Martha Stewart's Most Serious Charge Dropped (Feb 29 2004 05:00 GMT) - Domestic diva MARTHA STEWART got her first good news in a very long time Friday when a Federal judge dropped the securities fraud charge against her. That charge alone could have sent Martha to prison for up to 10 years, the most time for any of the charges she faces. The government had argued that when Martha declared her innocence in the ImClone scandal, she lied to the stockholders of her own company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Martha still faces four counts from her sale of ImClone stock in 2001, including conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and two counts of lying to investigators, which could send her to prison for up to 20 years. Martha has pleaded innocent to all charges. |

Timberlake's Song Was Pure Revenge At Britney (Feb 29 2004 05:00 GMT) - Justin Timberlake's producer Timbaland says the hit song "Cry Me a River" was a direct retaliation at ex-love Britney Spears -- after she made a comment about him onstage. The hitmaker has always refused to confirm speculation that the song, and the accompanying video -- which features a Britney lookalike, were about his ex. But according to Timbaland -- who co-produced the album Justified -- Timberlake deliberately wrote the angry track shortly after the pair split in 2002. Timbaland says, "How that came about was Britney did a show -- he came in mad because she said something about him on stage." "I had the beat already there and he started humming the words and said 'I'm gonna get her ... |
