Rough Roots (Feb 29 2004 05:47 GMT) - Went to Roots Cafe tonight with a crowd to see the Tarbox Ramblers, a band that has been classified as "primitive alt-blues". I'd call them something between the sound of Jim Beam and cigarettes and a sawdust-strewn floor on one hand, and a Pentacostal prayer meeting (minus the snakes) on the other. Their music is raw, powerful, and beautiful because of (rather than inspite of) its rough edges. It's wabi-sabi country blues. |

The Passion (Feb 29 2004 05:46 GMT) - I saw it tonight, and thought it was good. It's not going to kindle a third awakening or anything, but it was good. I'll state the obvious and say that most people who are Christian, particularly Catholics, will come away feeling moved; most people who aren't (including most big media critics) likely won't. It's flawed in parts. |
