Meltdown Part II (Feb 29 2004 09:23 GMT) - Mark Lynas Saturday February 14, 2004 The Guardian The total area of Arctic sea ice is diminishing rapidly: satellite data shows an area one and a half times the size of Wales is lost every year. This reduction is bad news for marine life. Walruses, for example, need sea ice thick enough to hold their weight but in shallow enough water to allow them to dive and feed on the sea bottom. Similarly, ringed seals depend on sea ice as a habitat for pupping, moulting, foraging and resting. |

'The Passion' of the Americans (Feb 29 2004 09:23 GMT) - By William Rivers Pitt t r u t h o u t | Perspective Friday 27 February 2004 My question is much simpler: Why would Mel Gibson make a movie about people in the ancient Middle East and cast it with so many white people? To look at the central actors in this film, you'd think Jesus did his work near Manchester, New Hampshire instead of the Holy Land. The answer to that question lies within the United States, the prime market for this film. |

Why Do We Need 'Greener' Computers (Feb 29 2004 09:22 GMT) - We all know that our computers are pretty bad for our environment. They're not easily destroyed when they become obsolete and contain lots of hazardous materials such as lead, carcinogens and other toxins. But this remarkable essay published by Midrange Server, Lean, Mean Green Machines, is focused on one particular point: the waste of electricity -- and other resources, including coal, used to produce it. This waste at the same time costs us money and 'destroys' our environment. |
