Bishamon Pattern II (Feb 29 2004 10:36 GMT) - Here is a second traditional Bishamon pattern. Except what it shares with the Bishamon-kikko pattern, I don’t know much of the history of this pattern. This pattern, again like the Bishamon-kikko pattern, is used on all forms of clothing and can be found in many other forms of traditional art in Japan. It appears in sashiko, shibori and katazome textile decorations. |

You can tell the sun ... (Feb 29 2004 10:36 GMT) - You can tell the sun is getting stronger by the new leaves on our coleus. Instead of the pale, washed-out colors of December, we're seeing the deep blood-purple of spring. |

I wonder if this is how an ice age would come - it couldn't all come at once, could it? 50 years, an inch at a time, and we'd be ground to dust under an impossible weight of snowflakes. |

What digital divide? (Feb 29 2004 10:35 GMT) - The UN moans and groans about the global digital divide and asks the rich world to spend money to close the gap. Now the Economist describes (Link requires subscription) how a recent study by two World Bank economists, Carsten Fink and Charles Kenny, questions the size and importance of the "digital divide". Fink and Kenny point out that it is economically efficient for poorer countries to have fewer computers, mobile phones, and similar technology. It makes more sense to compare information and communication technologies (ICTS) per dollar of GDP than ICTS per capita and by that measure many developing companies... |

STAŘÍ DOBŘÍ: Jan Neruda (XXVII.) (Feb 29 2004 10:35 GMT) - [[pak]] - Byla to zima překrásná! Kolkolem všude božský klid – ta příroda v kámen spoutána, zněmělý všechen, všechen lid. Ach zas je po všem! Pojednou vejskly si větry, zvlhnul vzduch, a po kraji dříve tichounkém šílený víří jarní ruch. Nevrle hledím oknem ven – nechte mně led můj, nechte sníh – vždyť nechápu více, nač ten rej, k čemu ta vřava, spěch a smích! |

Raw (Feb 29 2004 10:34 GMT) - Came across this raw food lifestyle recipe book from a friend recently that was very interesting. It's definitely a vegan diet, and one that promotes healthy recipes that is based upon the premise that enzymes that help digest food are destroyed when food is prepared in high heat. |

Frank Skinner Autobiography (Feb 29 2004 10:34 GMT) - I re-read 'Frank Skinner' by 'Frank Skinner' yesterday (Excellent UK Comedian & Chat show host - I'm rediscovering my love of auto/biographies). Frank grew up a Catholic and came back to the Catholic faith about 10 years or so ago. Like all of us he struggles with his faith, with what he believes, the church, and like most people I know with concepts of right and wrong. (Or at least I do, maybe I shouldn't speak for everyone!)Anyway - he talks about his faith a fair bit, and at one point, aft ... |
