Today the government is having ... (Feb 29 2004 15:59 GMT) - Today the government is having a march in a vain attempt to prove they still have support to the G15 delegates. There was a time when the government could make and win this argument, but that time has passed. Not because government support lacks numbers (they are still the biggest, single, political group) but, rather, by the stupidity of its own actions. Of course they may have a lot of people, perhaps even more than in Fridays opposition march, but it is easier to go to a march that will not be attacked by the army. It is much harder to march knowing that you may end up in jail, injured, gassed, or, even, killed. |

Thandi, a nine-month-old orphaned black rhinoceros, kisses Melanie... (Feb 29 2004 15:54 GMT) - Thandi, a nine-month-old orphaned black rhinoceros, kisses Melanie Adendorff, of South African National Parks, after Thandi's release into a holding boma at Addo National Park, 50 miles north-east of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Friday Feb. 27, 2004. The rehabilitation and translocation of two endangered black rhino orphans, hand-reared after each was abandoned at birth, was made possible by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), working with the Wildcare Africa Trust and South African National Parks. Only 3,100 black rhinoceros - Diceros bicornis - remain in Africa, with more than 1,100 in South African conservation areas. From 1970-1992, the numbers of black rhinoceros declined by 96% from 65,000 to 2,300 individuals, mostly due to poaching. |
