Graffiti and Photography 2 (Feb 29 2004 16:59 GMT) - Other things that connect graffiti and photography for me: 1. The way both graffiti artists and urban photographers seem to cover one neighborhood at a time, moving out in an ever widening radius from their home base. That kind of methodical coverage is totally a graffiti trait. 2. |

Thughts on Graffiti and Photography 2 (Feb 29 2004 16:59 GMT) - There are other things about my style of photography that remind me of the old days when we were doing graffiti. One of them is the way that I have been covering neighborhoods downtown, one at a time. That kind of methodical coverage is totally a graffiti trait. Another thing I like about taking pictures like this is how completely in the moment you are- that reminds me of times when we were catching tags, always looking over our shoulder for cops and crazy bums and other kids with beef. The last thing that makes the connection for me... |

Her first Performance (Feb 29 2004 16:58 GMT) - I had this whole huge entry up about Chitlin's first recital, and how she's growing up too fast, but my computer revolted against me and ate it. Performance was great, my baby has no rhythm, I don't think she'll become a professional ballerina, and I'm hoping to convince her that Art or Band is the way for her. Friends and family came Friday night, and she went home with lots of flowers and gifts. The weekend has been spent watching her dance around the house, and very intense colouring. And she is growing up too fast. |

Where do you want to go, Aiden? (Feb 29 2004 16:58 GMT) - Clemens Vasters: "The whole thing about 'free software' is a lie. ItÕs a dream created and made popular by people who have a keen interest in having cheap software so that they can drive down their own cost and profit more or by people who can easily demand it, because they make their money out of speaking at conferences or write books about how nice it is to have free software. |

Pakistan Is Undergoing A Reality Check - Financial Express (Feb 29 2004 16:57 GMT) - "Public opinion in Pakistan is beginning to change. Participants in a range of 'track II' dialogues cutting across various professions report that the old 'arrogance' of the Islamabad and Karachi elite, born partly out of Pakistan’s superior economic performance in the 1960s to 1980s, and partly reflecting cultural attitudes towards Indians, has gone. My own interactions with Pakistanis in the past had convinced me that what Pakistan’s elite and middle classes needed most was a 'reality check', on where exactly they stood vis-a-vis India and the world." |

Online network connects like-minded Muslims - Oakland Tribune (Feb 29 2004 16:57 GMT) - "Part of her hoped she'd find her soul mate when she joined Naseeb, a new online Muslim community. But getting a marriage proposal just three months later -- while on a snowboarding trip in Pennsylvania -- was way beyond Saara Sheikh's expectations. Raised by conservative, Pakistani Muslim parents, Sheikh knew dating was out. Still, she rebelled at the idea of a traditional arranged marriage, skipping out on meetings her parents set up with potential spouses." |

Peace, cricket spur Indian fans to tour Pakistan - Reuters (Feb 29 2004 16:57 GMT) - "Travel firms expect nearly 10,000 Indians to visit Pakistan -- the first time in the history of the two countries that so many tourists will be making the trip -- and have put together packages that offer cricket as well as tours to historic sites ... The series, dubbed a "goodwill tour" and the most concrete expression of the new bid for peace between the two countries, has generated huge interest in cricket-crazy India. Matches between the two teams are marked by intense competition and have in the past been called 'war without guns'."The large number of Indian visitors will not only give a boost to tourism in Pakistan, it increases the probability of the Indian team completing the tour (as opposed to flying out in the middle due to some silly incident). BBC reports, Pakistan make crowd plea. |

Is middle path a taboo? - Hi Pakistan (Feb 29 2004 16:57 GMT) - "The carnage at Basant, the expense, the discomfort to citizens, the display of vulgarity and the time lost during and after the festival do make a case against the current mode of these celebrations. But the event has come to stay whatever the cost. The same has happened to the Valentine’s Day. Until a few years back, most citizens of the developing world had not even heard of this phenomenon. Suddenly, greeting cards, flowers and chocolates became a rage. |

Pakistan-Afghan Relations: What Must Islamabad Do - MMN (Feb 29 2004 16:56 GMT) - "While in Kabul-Islamabad the political will exists it is not being sufficiently nurtured. Much of it, until recently was expended on countering the ill-will generated around the question of terrorism. Islamabad’s political will to now strategically, not tactically, mend fences with Kabul irrespective of who forms the government, must be accompanied by a relationship vision in which trade and economy acquire primacy without undermining Pakistan’s security interests." |

East Asian trade: Everybody's doing it - Economist (Feb 29 2004 16:56 GMT) - "With everyone but Mongolia and North Korea doing it, even South Korea's protectionists could not resist any longer. After three failed attempts, the National Assembly finally ratified the country's first-ever free-trade agreement (FTA) last week. Since such agreements are becoming commonplace, and since South Korea chose a modest and distant trading partner, Chile, for its first foray into tariff-free trade, it would be easy to dismiss the treaty's importance to the rest of Asia. Yet it may signal the start of a more aggressive phase in the region's trade policy." |

Photos á la JAlbum (Feb 29 2004 16:54 GMT) - I've added some cool photos to my album online. They are now being created with JAlbum, which is by far the best Web Album creator I have seen. With that, I have thrown away the MT photoblog. |
