Birds and blades (Feb 29 2004 18:28 GMT) - Odd coincidence: the day after my first mention of the Altamont Pass windmills, today's Contra Costa Times has a report on birds killed by those turbines. |

Cinema :: Osama (Feb 29 2004 18:28 GMT) - zygmunt bauman, in one of his commentaries on the liquid modernity in which we now live, commented on the way news sets an agenda for today, dissects it in detail and then, tomorrow, moves on to a new agenda, shoving aside all that was discussed previously. afghanistan is one such issue that has been pushed aside in the head rush for new news. it's only two and a half years since the us began their attacks on afghanistan, but in that time other events - the current adventures in the middle east - have pushed afghanistan off the news agenda, save for the occasional minor report on us casualties in the country. siddiq barmak's film - the first film to be wholly made in post-taliban afghanistan, though with outside funding - is set in post-russian and pre-american afghanistan, with the taliban enforcing their strict reading of islamic beliefs. osama tells the story of twleve-year-old osama-who-was-a-girl. |

Books :: Dr Seuss And The Post-Modernists (Feb 29 2004 18:28 GMT) - In 1984, at the Whitney Museum in New York, the modern met the postmodern. In his performance of Muoyce, composer John Cage -- most famous for 4'33", his 1952 work in which a musician stays utterly silent for precisely four minutes and 33 seconds -- "wrote through" Finnegans Wake by chanting letters and word-fragments that had been systematically separated from their original syntax and context. As interpreted by Cage and his computer, James Joyce's text was reduced to sequences of meaningless pseudo-words: "permienting hi himself then pass ahs c." A cathedral of literature was presented as a confused pile of masonry and stained glass. |

Film :: Slavoj Zizek On The Passion Of The Christ (Feb 29 2004 18:28 GMT) - Those who virulently criticized Mel Gibsons The Passion even before its release seem unassailable: Are they not justified to worry that the film, made by a fanatic Catholic known for occasional anti-Semitic outbursts, may ignite anti-Semitic sentiments? More generally, is The Passion not a manifesto of our own (Western, Christian) fundamentalists? Is it then not the duty of every Western secularist to reject it, to make it clear that we are not covert racists attacking only the fundamentalism of other (Muslim) cultures? The Popes ambiguous reaction to the film is well known: |

RSS: What geeks say (Feb 29 2004 18:27 GMT) - Slashdot, the uber-site for techies, as an interesting thread on RSS as the Next Big Thing. The summary, below, isn't nearly as interesting as the threaded comments from (at this time) more than 100 readers. "Yahoo! carries an Associated Press editorial about RSS-based news feeds, and how they are pushing the spam-ridden e-mail and advertising-ridden web-pages aside and consolidate information from multiple sites. Slashdot itself is mentioned by the author as one of his sources. |

The Randian Imperative (Feb 29 2004 18:27 GMT) - Organized Objectivism and intellectual organizations. -- Last night, Diana Hsieh spoke at a local Objectivist group regarding her statement of disassociation from The Objectivist Center (formerly the Institute for Objectivist Studies). Since I'm persona non grata at gatherings of this local group (that's another story) and since I prefer to spend my Saturday nights doing some good cooking and a little blogging rather than arguing about Ayn Rand, I didn't attend Diana's talk. But naturally I do have opinions in the matter. In fact, as one of my email correspondents pointed out, I've been expressing those opinions for quite a while now. |

Remembering why I don't like hardware... (Feb 29 2004 18:24 GMT) - As I mentioned a few days ago I put out a call for some help with purchasing a rackmount server to host the OI websites, demo websites, CVS, downloads, etc. I only received two responses so far (many, many thanks) but they were more than enough to make up the difference for the following: AOpen Fortress 9100: AOpen DX3R-1U motherboard with dual P3, onboard SCSI, 1U case with hotplug mounts, case fans, CPU fans, CD-ROM + FDD and all that; also a set of rails (both from a reputable ebay dealer) 512 MB registered ECC PC 133 from MemoryX 2 P3 600EB FC-PGA CPUs from Star Micro And unless some SCSI drives fall from heaven I'll just put my own in there, making this a pretty decent machine. |

catalan supercomputer (Feb 29 2004 18:24 GMT) - Maybe the inclusion of magic word "Linux" in the announcement calmed them down, but I'm still a bit surprised that neither the opposition nor the wild-eyed crazies of the decentralisation lobby have yet cried foul over the government's surprise announcement,... |
