Terrorist hunters rounding up fugitives' ... (Feb 29 2004 20:52 GMT) - Terrorist hunters rounding up fugitives' relatives The claim from Iranian state radio that Bin Laden was already captured was certainly nonsense, and the earlier report that he was "boxed in" is unlikely to be true, but there are a number of signs that the good guys are closing in on both Bin Laden and other top terrorists. Taking a lesson from the operation ending with the capture of Saddam Hussein, American investigators have started to round up relatives of al-Qaeda leaders to question them about their possible whereabouts. Also, supposedly, some of the same experts who helped captured Saddam has been transfered to Afghanistan to repeat the feat there. |

Why Do We Need 'Greener' Computers (Feb 29 2004 20:51 GMT) - We all know that our computers are pretty bad for our environment. They're not easily destroyed when they become obsolete and contain lots of hazardous materials such as lead, carcinogens and other toxins. But this remarkable essay published by Midrange Server, Lean, Mean Green Machines, is focused on one particular point: the waste of electricity -- and other resources, including coal, used to produce it. This waste at the same time costs us money and 'destroys' our environment. |

"No blood for oil" folks on wrong side (Feb 29 2004 20:51 GMT) - Glenn Reynolds has been covering the UN's sham "oil for food" program for some time, and he points to this post by Jan Haugland who makes an excellent point about which side really had the right to use that slogan: Obviously, it was those who supported the war to remove Saddam Hussein that could justifiably have used the slogan "no blood for oil" |

Public referer pages now available for blogs (Feb 29 2004 20:50 GMT) - One of the key reasons weblogging has taken off is the referer page (mine is to the right). Using it you can see who has pointed to my weblog (and how many readers they have sent here). It's one reason why weblogs are conversational where "old style" websites aren't. My coworker, Jeff Sandquist, who uses a tool that doesn't have a public referer page, shows there's a new service that lets you build a public referer page so your readers can see who links to you. |

Terrorism? What terrorism?. The political ... (Feb 29 2004 20:48 GMT) - Terrorism? What terrorism?. The political problem, for the current administration, is that confronting this means throwing into stark relief the ineffectiveness of the Bush Doctrine -- particularly as it has played out in the invasion of Iraq. It makes all too clear that the current conflict is not only a grotesquely ineffective response to the unique challenges posed by terrorism, it is likely to worsen the problem exponentially. It should be clear that Bush's war on terror is not only making us less safe abroad, its mishandling of domestic terrorism makes us substantially less safe at home. |
