Small town homophobia (Feb 29 2004 21:29 GMT) - Sometimes, living in a small town on the midwestern plains is a real trial. The recent furor over gay marriage has roused the sanctimonious pissants in town to action, and our little newspaper, the Morris Sun Tribune, has been the scene for some ferocious back-and-forth over the issue; it sells papers, I guess, and keeps the editorials and letters to the editor lively. A group consisting... |

The Cutting Room Floor (Feb 29 2004 21:27 GMT) - Doc reminds me that CBS's Sunday Morning show was going to run a piece today about the Net and politics, but has postponed it. Doc says he was told he'd be in the segment. I was also interview but haven't been told I'm in it, so I assume I'm on the virtual cutting room floor. Given the number of people I've interviewed a great length and never put into columns, I can't complain. Good journalism often involves getting 10x the amount of material you think you need, to make sure you're not missing ... |

Audioscrobbler Browser update (Feb 29 2004 21:26 GMT) - Thanks to a wonderful new similarity algorithm from Amnon Amir and a heap of new Creative Commons-licensed data from the Audioscrobbler server, the Audioscrobbler Browser has been hugely improved. It's a dynamic TouchGraph visualisation, which shows links between similar artists, calculated by analysing shared listening trends (more details of the algorithm used can be found on the Audioscrobbler wiki). Double-click on nodes to expand the graph, and play with the settings to adjust the level of detail - hopefully you'll find some new bands to seek out. |
