Loving v. Virginia (Feb 29 2004 22:50 GMT) - In all the debate about gay marriage, a common refrain heard from opponents is that the definition of marriage has been the same for centuries if not millennia. Not so. The fact is, the current rules about who can be married have been in place (in some states) for less than 40 years. (more..) |

work cited list / annoated sources (Feb 29 2004 22:50 GMT) - [quote:fd38f9c655="tdol"]Maybe activities that divide the class into smaller groups would make things more manageable, rather than running head-on into 60 students, which is an enormous and daunting number. ;-)[/quote:fd38f9c655]Quite right tdol and i've used a couple of group activities that went well but i'm having trouble devising activities (that don't require a lot of photocopying and cutting up pieces of paper) that would utilise smaller groups. |

SimpleQuiz › Part XIII › Empholdics › Conclusion (Feb 29 2004 22:49 GMT) - This last SimpleQuiz stirred up some great opinions. Shadowy kidnappings keep Chechens on edge (Feb 29 2004 22:48 GMT) - Shadowy kidnappings keep Chechens on edge Masked, heavily armed men in unidentifiable uniforms show up in armored vehicles and demand to see documents. Sometimes, they seem to be looking for a person. Sometimes, they round up and take away every fighting-age male in their path. Some of those they detain come back telling harrowing stories of beatings and torture to family members and human rights groups. Many never come back at all. |

On the cusp of March (Feb 29 2004 22:48 GMT) - It should be spring by now. Cambodia's rights movement faces peril (Feb 29 2004 22:47 GMT) - Cambodia's rights movement faces peril On a recent trip to a village along the banks of the Mekong River, Kem Sokha brought along not only his trusted bodyguard but also a private American security specialist. Kem Sokha is not a politician, a big businessman, or a diplomat, but a leader in Cambodia's fledgling human rights movement. And he believes his life is in danger. The recent brazen killings of a prominent labor organizer, Chea Vichea, and several others affiliated with an opposition political group have heightened the sense of lawlessness in Cambodia, where murder is seen as a common political tool -- and the rich and powerful seem above the law. |

Colm Toibin on Lady GregorySomeone ... (Feb 29 2004 22:47 GMT) - Colm Toibin on Lady GregorySomeone once asked a famous writer why he had written such a long book. "Because", he replied, "I was not clever enough to write a short one". This is often attributed to George Bernard Shaw, but I'm not sure about its provenence. It came to mind a lot this weekend, though, because I've read Colm Toibin's Lady Gregory's Toothbrush, a gem of a biographical essay on WB Yeats's friend and collaborator, Lady Augusta Gregory. It's a beautiful little (125-page) book, packed full of effortless insight, and fascinating for anyone who (like me) is interested in Yeats. |
