60 degrees! (Feb 29 2004 22:33 GMT) - The weather is finally warming up! It was nearly 60º (F) yesterday, and it actually got up into the low 60s today! The sun has been shining, and I'm delighted that the cold weather has broken at last. The was one of the coldest winters that I remember in many years. |

Magpies Everywhere (Feb 29 2004 22:31 GMT) - Although I'm loathe to include any personal entries on this site, I feel compelled to write about something odd I saw today. I was (and to an extent still am) having a terrible day, and on the way home I spotted something odd: 24 magpies. One for sorrow, two for joy... and all the rest. |

Akamatsu's Thoughts on Negima (Feb 29 2004 22:31 GMT) - Following last week's announcement (and retraction) of the censorship of Negima, the manga artist himself commented on the issue. A mis-interpretation while translating his 2/22 entry lead some fans to believe he is "angry" with the edits. This is not true. In his 2/26 entry, Akamatsu clarifies his position, saying "[I] am not mad. During the translation process to English, there was a misunderstanding. |

Power laws and purchasing priorities (Feb 29 2004 22:31 GMT) - Gavin Starks: I know someone who has 200GB of MP3's and has stopped buying CDs altogether. If they *really* think someone deserves it, they just **buy the CD**. It's neat, simple and fits the existing commercial models. Personally I'd rather be evangelising the message: |

Venezuelan protestors take to the streets again (Feb 29 2004 22:31 GMT) - Venezuelan protestors take to the streets again Chanting "Chavez! Chavez!" more than 100,000 Venezuelans marched Sunday to support President Hugo Chavez as opponents demanding his recall staged demonstrations in several cities. Yesterday, President Hugo Chavez threatened to turn tanks against the capital's opposition-controlled police force, which he said did nothing to stop marchers from clashing with the National Guard during a two-day summit of developing nations. |

Movie Violence (Feb 29 2004 22:29 GMT) - I've not seen The Passion, but Andrew Hagen makes the normal point that this movie shows a lot of violence, which is inconsistent with many conservative positions on violence in the movies. There is a more sophisticated social conservative position... |

A note on pop culture (Feb 29 2004 22:29 GMT) - I don't watch award shows, neither the Oscars nor the Academy Awards. I can barely tell which show is which. I am vaguely certain that one of them or the other is the Golden Globe, but fuck me if I know which. Since I grew up sans TV, much of pop culture looks vaguely alike and vaguely boring. I can't tell any of the members of Boyband Du Jour apart, and I think that Britney Spears is pretty hot wearing that snake in that one thing, or at least she would be if she spelled better. |

DIY iPod Battery Pack (Feb 29 2004 22:29 GMT) - I just can't tell you the number of times I reach for my iPod, stuff those little white earbuds into my ears, and relish tuning out for a few minutes... only to find that my battery's dead. I plumb forgot to charge it. I could plug in to my Powerbook, but I need every ounce of battery power for that work I'd planned to do in-flight. And there's not an electrical outlet in sight--not that I want to be tied to the wall anyway, mind you. |

A Message from Howard Dean (Feb 29 2004 22:28 GMT) - The quotes attributed to me by others in Howard Kurtz's gossipy rendition of the divisions in the Dean for America campaign are entirely false, as is the description of my reaction after losing the Iowa caucuses, before the famous speech.... |
