Petty Cash (Mar 01 2004 23:17 GMT) - Professor Bainbridge reviews the infamous letter Michael Eisner, chairman of Disney, sent to Michael Ovitz, then the president of the company before they parted ways, and offers some interesting commentary. The letter casts both recipient and author in a bad light, revealing a level of pettiness more typical of a high school student government than a top media corporation. I hate to disagree with the good professor, but I think the type of pettiness reflected in this letter is typical of all sorts of personal interactions, be they in student governance or huge corporations. In fact, I think it is relatively restrained, since it doesn't contain any particular obscenities or vulgar suggestions, and in an industry in which stars routinely ask for all sorts of absurd (and potentially petty) things it is probably fairly common. After almost fifteen years scrounging around in the remains of corporate debtors, large and small, I am always reminded of how petty people can be. |
