Real Obnoxious (Mar 01 2004 23:24 GMT) - Real Obnoxious: Real Player, most prominently, is a small application with inferiority complex and delusions of grandeur, not too different from Napoleon. The best description of Real Player I've seen so far. And I'm lucky to use the Mac OS X version, slightly less annoying than its Windows counterpart. I can't remember when was the last time this player looked and performed like a simple video player and not a marketer's nightmare come true. |

Smartmobs and Art (Mar 01 2004 23:23 GMT) - In the Forecast -- Art, Research, and Rainstorms Flash Mobs, and other forms of ad-hoc gatherings based on spontaneous communications, but how could networks begin to look as they become even more integrated into the feedback loop of daily life? Well, artists Jonah Brucker-Cohen and Katherine Moriwaki have envisioned a project that asks such a question, using - you guessed it - umbrellas. Their plan is to use wireless computing to create spontaneous and temporary networks among people based on shared contexts and experiences - in this case, proximity and weather. And, of course, possession of special, network-enabled, rain-deflection devices. This February, the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology, along with the ARCO Foundation, awarded the artists proposal, Umbrella. |

Essay on space, the web, and community (Mar 01 2004 23:23 GMT) - Jordon Cooper blogs on Smart Mobs : Technology adoption is more than just learning how to use it. Lots of people have cell phones that send SMS messages but few actually use that feature to keep up with anyone. The smart mobs that Howard Rheingold describes in Smart Mobs in Tokyo are few and far between in North America despite the fact that we have the technology to do it. Having e-mail is different in being comfortable using it for regular communications. |

IBM's WebFountain of Knowledge (Mar 01 2004 23:23 GMT) - There is a world where Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft compete to build better search engines and -- also -- for our money. Then there is a completely different world, the corporate market. And the next big thing in Web search in this other world might be the WebFountain supercomputing project from IBM. It's not your ordinary project. |
