Windows 2003 Server kicks A$$ (Mar 02 2004 23:30 GMT) - Tim Macrina, who hosts my blog along with the other projects I work on such as TeacherReviews, has some nice things to say about upgrading the server we use from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003. I've been running Windows 2003 Server for about a month and I can't say anything bad about it. My biggest reason for praising 2003 is that my average memory usage went from 1540 Mb to 862 Mb. CPU usage seemed to have also dropped significantly but it is hard for me to gage because I added a second processor at the time of the upgrade install. Aside from resource usage improvements, I've also seen a significant improvement when it came to the way that IIS handled web requests, but I won't get into that here. |

US pushes net porn ban, again (Mar 02 2004 23:30 GMT) - AP reports on yet another push by the Bush administration for a prohibition on online pornography, via the COPA act. Supreme Court judges don't seem to be buying government arguments that the act should be reinstated. Porn is ``as easily available to children as a television remote,'' [Solicitor General Theodore Olson] told the justices as he defended a 1998 law that Congress meant as a firewall to shield children. The Child Online Protection Act has never taken... |

Macworld review: VectorWorks 10.5 (Mar 02 2004 23:30 GMT) - When we last reviewed VectorWorks, we felt that the program was an excellent value with well-integrated 2-D and 3-D capabilities and good documentation. However, we wished for more templates and symbols, and for QuickTime VR support. Well, the QuickTime VR support is still not here, but VectorWorks 10.5 has many more templates, symbols, and textures. It's also compatible with Panther (in a version 10. |

Big deal (Mar 02 2004 23:28 GMT) - There we go. There was once water on Mars! If you spent your teenage years reading tons of science-fiction as I did, this great news could do little but bring a slight satisfaction. We knew. We read about it decades ago. |

Italy Curbs Science and Reproduction (Mar 02 2004 23:28 GMT) - The New York Times [Reg. Required] reports that Italy, in an assault on individual liberty worthy of President Bush and U.S. religious conservatives, has severely restricted many forms of technology-assisted reproduction, especially for non-heterosexuals. In mid-February, the Italian Parliament voted,... |

NY Times: An Extra Eye in Combat, and Maybe Aboard Airplanes (Mar 02 2004 23:27 GMT) - Essential Viewing's software compresses signals by effectively making a sketch of each image rather than transmitting it pixel by pixel. A neural network - a program designed to mimic the brain - breaks each image down into a series of shapes from a code book that contains 512 curves, triangles and so forth. The program then translates the configuration of shapes to reassemble them into an image at the other end. The compressed data requires as little as 1 percent of the transmission capacity of the same image sent uncompressed. The reassembled picture is not as sharp as a typical television image, but it seldom needs to be for the tasks it is used for. |

Burning Books (Mar 02 2004 23:26 GMT) - I just finished listening to Garth Nix's Sabriel on audio CD. I loved the story, narration, everything. I immediately went home to download the next book in the series, Lirael, from Audible.com (yes, it's all legal), only to learn that Listening Library hasn't released it yet. I can't even buy the CDs from Amazon, although I may be able to persuade my local library to get them direct from LL. |

E-Voting conflict in the news (Mar 02 2004 23:25 GMT) - I suppose the issue is one of perspective, which is, as they say, everything. Some news agencies reported on the recent primaries and the many glitches in the electronic voting that has been going on. It is important to look at the numbers provided in the early part of the day, such as the 20% failure rate provided by Diebold, the maker of the terminals, and while on a 10 state scale this is fine, on a nationwide scale with every citizen possibly voting, it is less than great. On the other hand, CNet reported that there were few glitches, but also reminded people that there are still serious doubts as to the security of the machines, and worries about the fact there is no way to verify how people did vote, and there is no proof the vote was recorded properly. I suspect that such possible irregularities will come up as much as hanging chad's did 4 years ago if this election is anywhere near as close as last time. |
